We have dial up right now. And DH can access wireless from someone in the neighborhood (I know, I know - its not very nice). But sometimes the wireless doesnt work and it makes it harder for DH since he's a reporter and needs to send in his stories. So I was thinking of getting Roadrunner or DSL or wireless (is that the same as DSL) for DH for Christmas. Can anyone guide me so I make the right decision?

I have not had DSL but I believe cable is a little faster than DSL. We have RR and we love it. Its really fast and we have not had a lot of problems with it going down.

I have had DSL and cable (Road Runner). Road Runner is faster (at least for us) and goes through your cable connection. DSL is still much faster then dial up though. DSL goes through your phone line, but does not effect your ability to make a recieve calls.

Wireless can be done with either DSL or cable, as long as you buy a wireless router and have a wireless card for your computer.

We had DSL in NJ, RR cable in FL, RR is much faster. There were times that the DSL wasn't any faster than dial up!

What would you guys recommend as the best after looking at the following costs?

We have digital cable and our cable company (Time Warner) has a deal that if you sign up for Roadrunner you get it for $34.95 a month for the first 6 months, $39.95 a month thereafter. And its free installation. And no contract. So thats $449.40 for a year - but with no commitment.

Our phone company, Verizon, has a DSL deal. You sign up for a year (3 Mbps). The first month is free, $19.95 a month for months 2-3, and then months 4-12 is $29.95. Plus a $19.95 shipping charge. So thats $329.40 but we're "stuck" with it for a year. There is also an option for 786 kbps for $14.95 a month but it sounds like it might be slow...

Where would I get info on wireless? Im assuming it costs a lot more?

When we lived in SC we had RR. When we moved to WV we first had DSL. My husband said there was a HUGE difference between the 2. RR is definitely faster. Of course he does on-line gaming, so you see a bigger difference in that. I thought there was nothing wrong with DSL, but then again all I do is surf the web and the DIS boards.

DH plays poker online a lot. It would be nice for him not to get kicked off whenever someone calls. And someone told me if I get a wireless router for about $30 we can use the RR on our laptop too. Im leaning towards RR - especially since we can cancel it easier. Plus I can leave DH clues about his gift and make him guess.

Time Warner should have a digital package that includes RR without an introductory rate. At least that is how it worked when I had TW (we now have Bright House). Anyway, we have RR and love it. I set up our wireless network. Oh and don't forget to set up the WEP so your neighbor can't use your WiFi.
