We are planning a major road trip for this summer. I have written and re-written, planned and re-planned. I could really use some outside advice, because my laid back family is willing to go along with whatever, but I'm concerned I'm going to mess this up.
Just for background, we're a family of four (two adults, 16 year old daughter, 13 year old son). We live about 6 hours from my mom, and make that trip about 4-5 times a year, so we're used to being in the car. We have taken several road trips down the east coast, with a maximum of about 10 hours per day driving. I have a great deal of camping experience, but we've only been camping as a family for about 3 years (it took that long for me to convince DH he would like it, which he did). None of us have been farther west than Wisconsin, and my kids haven't been farther west than Ohio. We have a moderate budget.
Here's our plan. Questions are in bold:
July 7 - Leave east coast-ish home, travel 8 hours to Pokagon State Park in Indiana. Camp overnight. Has anyone been here? Is it a nice campsite?
July 8 - Travel 7 hours to LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Ride a Mississippi River paddleboat. Travel another 40 minutes to Great Bluffs State Park in Minnesota. Camp overnight. Opinions on this campsite? Anything else inexpensive to do in LaCrosse?
July 9 - Travel 9 hours to the Mount Rushmore KOA. Visit Mount Rushmore. Stay in a Kamper Kabin. I have heard that Mount Rushmore is always fogged in. How accurate is that? Will we have better luck with the evening lighting ceremony? Has anyone stayed at this KOA? Are the cabins well screened against bugs?
July 10 - Stay at the KOA. Use the pool, laundry room, mini-golf, trail rides, and other amenities. Are there inexpensive sights to be seen in the area? Anything that would be cool for east-coasters to check out?
July 11 - Travel 8.5 hours to Grant Campground at Yellowstone National Park. Explore Yellowstone Lake area. Camp overnight. Can I just say, "Oh, help?" Will we be eaten by bears? I have camping experience, but not with GRIZZLIES. We are planning to use all of our food by this point and ONLY eat at the cafeterias, so there will be NO food at our campsite. What about sunscreen? I am very fair skinned, so I have to wear it always. Does sunscreen attract bears? What are the most important things to see at Yellowstone? Will a 30 degree rated sleeping bag be warm enough in July? Get the idea? I want to see this park, but it scares me witless.
July 12 - Travel the Grand Loop Road. See Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Fall, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and Hayden Valley. Camp overnight, if not eaten by bears already. What am I missing?
July 13 - Travel 8 hours to Missoula, Montana, by way of Grand Teton National Park. Stop at Jenny Lake Overlook for a rest break. Stay in a hotel with room service and order pizza. (Yes, we'll be sick of camping...) What are the best pull-off spots to see a bit of Grand Teton on a pass-through?
July 14 - Travel 8 hours to my sister's house in Bremerton, WA. Non-negotiable, as we can't wait to see her! We'll be staying here until July 16.
July 16 - Travel 9.5 hours to Patrick's Point State Park in Trinidad, CA via the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway through Redwood National Forest. See the forest, for the trees. ;-) Camp overnight, and listen to seals and/or sea lions! I heard this park may be frequented by, hmm... People who enjoy alternate recreational pharmaceuticals. Truth or rumor? Travelling with kids, here.
July 17 - Travel 10.5 hours (Yeah, crazy time, but we're going to Disney. We do it ALL the time, east coast style.) to Anaheim. Stop in Cesar Chavez Park across the bay from the Golden Gate Bridge to take a picture and thank God we made it across the evil, evil, two decker earthquake prone bridge across the bay. Stop again at the Hollywood and Highland center for cheesy tourist picture with Hollywood sign and in front of Graumann's. Stay at hotel near Anaheim convention center. Is this too crazy? Also, will we die on the 1-580 Richmond Bridge? I have this bridge phobia. To go with my grizzly phobia, apparently.
July 18, 19, 20 - Stay at hotel. See Disneyland and California Adventure. It may be not quite normal for us WDW vets, but I bet it still feels like home. I think we'll be okay here, but I'll take food suggestions. Low cost, please, my wallet is screaming at this point...
July 21 - Drive 1.5 hours (very, very early in the morning) to San Diego Convention Center. ATTEND COMIC CON!! (Yes, we got badges.) Can we get in line for Hall H before we have our badges, then head in pairs to the registration desk when it opens? Stay in a hotel in Kearny Mesa (Booked before prices jumped for Comic Con, would rather not change).
July 22 - Stay in San Diego. Visit the zoo. I've heard I may be disappointed after all the hype. Is it worth the exorbitant admission price? We have been Philly zoo members for years, and have seen the Pandas at the National Zoo. Will this really be so much better?
July 23 - Drive 8 hours to Grand Canyon National Park. I believe this is a big ditch. My husband longs to see it. Whatcha gonna do? Drive 1.5 hours to Flagstaff, AZ and stay in a hotel. Will 2-3 hours be enough to just SEE the canyon from the rim, maybe check out the visitor center?
July 24 - Drive 8 hours to Amarillo, Texas. See the TEXAS! Outdoor Musical at Palo Duro State Park. Eat at the Chuckwagon Dinner there. Stay in a hotel. Anyone seen this? Is it worth it?
July 25 - Drive 11 hours(I know, I know, something had to give, and we need to get back home, as DH does have to work...) to a hotel in Collinsville, Illinois. Stop to see the Gateway Arch and Museum of Westward Expansion. Is it worth giving up something on the trip to pay an extra night's hotel and shorten these last two days, or should two adults with two mellow teenagers be able to tough it out? I'm conflicted...
July 26 - Scary, scary, 13 hours home.
So, laughing at me yet? Have I lost my marbles?
