With all of these reports about back up's on I-5 would 99 be a better option??
Is their construction on this route as well? Also, how about the Grapevine, any construction up there??

99 has always been slower than 5, but the slowdowns we just experienced traveling on I5 Wednesday were close to nothing. (around 3-5pm). We took 99 home and also had no problems, Monday around noon.
Behave yourself on the grapevine!! Law enforcement was plentiful and busy, so don't get caught.
Jack, since your driving I-5 from washington, you might want to know...
lakehead rest stop closed as of one month ago.
corning rest stop closed as of two weeks ago.
I-5 construction thru redding at cypress ave ( mostly at night).
I-5 construction approx 1 mile south of cottonwood.
Thanks for the responses.
Guess we will just take our chances, I could take 395, but not ideal leaving in the evening like I will be.
Will be spending the night in Santa Nella, and hitting Buttonwillow about 6am.... should be OK, I would guess?
Thanks for the info about the Grapevine, I got a $$$$$$$$$ speeding ticket at 1am a few years abck at Magic Mountain. I will be good!
I agree Jack. I was just looking for an alternative.
Been driving the I-5 forever! I was born in Carmichael, Ca, moved to Reno in 1988, but still drive the I-5 twice a year.... know it like the back of my hand.
I mostly go on 99 instead of I5 since I have family members who live right by 99. I do agree that I5 is faster than 99. But I likes to stop at Fresno or Bakersfield on 99 on my way to SoCal.
We drove I-5 down on Saturday, and I was prepared for bad traffic since my dad just did the drive mid July & said it was bad since there was only 1 lane. We did hit the area with only 1 lane, but it was short, and smooth.
We drove back today, still staying on I-5. After exiting the Grapevine, I saw the sign that said road construction in 35 miles, expect delays. There were no delays for us, well, unless you count the tomato truck that caught fire, so there were roasted tomatos on the road (nobody was hurt, just a damaged truck that already had the flames put out). That back up only lasted us maybe 15 minutes, tops. I never even noticed the roadwork.
I agree with the above. My experience has always been that even with traffic, the 5 is still faster than the 99. And I too got a speeding ticket on the Grapevine--OUCH!
Construction on both I 5 and 99 is hit and miss... You would think that they would have regular hours that they work but not these people.. it seems like when the coffee break is over... the donuts all gone.. then they might do a little work.. Will be nice when they get the reststops open again.. We are taking the boys to Disneyland for the day tomorrow... going to be a nice hot day in Anaheim..
