Road being built near Coronado Springs

I imagine this is already well-known, but I'm at a loss. When at WDW a couple of weeks ago, we noticed the (rather large) road being built on WDW property. Does anyone know what this is for? Driving from the All-Stars, it goes off to the left a little bit before you hit the Coronado Springs resort. From looking at a map, I couldn't guess where it might be headed.

It is the new western entrance to WDW, that will hook up to a new tollroad that connects to the FL turnpike, so that traffic coming in to WDW can bypass the I-4 tourist corridor completely. It was announced in the Orlando papers last September. The tollroad is supposed to be opened later this year. It will also make for a quicker way for people from west of WDW to get to AK to ride Everest :hyper:  :hyper:  :hyper:

You are correct. Except that the toll road (from 192 to the turnpike) is already open. The Disney road connecting to it will be open in a few months.

But there is no entrance/exit to the turnpike from the Greeneway yet, is there?

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise and the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority are building a new north-south toll expressway near the western edge of Walt Disney World. It's State Road 429, the Western Beltway. Much of it is aleady open.

Disney is spending $50 million to build Western Way, a private road connecting the Western Beltway to West Buena Vista Road (near Disney's Coronado Springs Resort).

This will be a major new entrance to Walt Disney World.

I found this site about Western Way: http://www.danielgunter.com/westernway.htm

Great link. If you look closely under the overpass in this photo you can see the new purple arch under construction.

Nope. Coming from the south on Florida's Turnpike the best way to Disney is probably Osceola Parkway (exit 249?). Coming from the north, use the new toll road 429 past the incomplete western Disney interchange to 192. Or you can use the dreaded I-4 or, from further north, Rte. 27 to 192.

At any rate, Florida's Turnpike and the Greene-Way cross over somewhere well east of Orlando Airport and even if there was an interchange there it would not be the most convenient route.

Osceola Parkway was great about five years ago. There were only a couple of traffic signals and very little development. A true toll road.

Now, there is so much being built and so many traffic signals that it's tough to be considered a legitimate toll road. But, still, it is the best option - far better than 192, or going all the way up to I-4.

It would be nice if the Greeneway connected to the Turnpike. The Greeneway crosses the Turnpike at nearly the same longitude as the Osceola. Of course, it is a couple miles further north on the Turnpike. It does, also, do more north/south jogging than the rather straight Osceola.

However, given the number of stoplights on Osceola, I suspect that the Greeneway would be faster if available.

The Disney portion of this road is complete with the new entrance sign with Mickey, Minnie and Donald also finished. The road is only about 25 yards from the new tollroad 429. Figure that is the end of Disney property and where the county/state road start. The overhead signs on the highway are up but they are covered in plastic. The entrance/exits are graded and they are pouring asphalt. Figure in the next few months the entrance/exits will be open.

From the turnpike to 192 the ride is only 10 minutes now 65MPH when this new road opens it will certainly be better than going down I-4.

The only thing Disney still has to do is the traffic signal at the end of the road by Coronado Springs.

In looking at the maps I might just choose to bypass the Western Way in favor of a shopping stop at on 192. The WW is probably quicker being lights free but it doesn't look like it'd save me a huge amount of distance.

Where are you driving from.

Please Keep Me Posted As We Will Be Arriving Late April. Hope The New Entrance Is Open By Then. Thanks.

Ok, so if I'm coming from I75, I take turnpike to new toll road? We are heading down mid-March and it would be great to avoid I4.
