Orlandosecret.com is website to their rental.

We arrived. 6 bedroom house-- $900 for week. Unpacking--on wall- roach. Dh kills and leaves in sink- looks behind fridge--few more alove and dead.

We pack up and get kids ready. I ask neighbor for owner's ##-- he gives-- line busy and his mgt company doesnt answer for few hrs.
Neighbor nice enough to rent us unit he has in Aviana (Far drive) BUT NEW and CLEAN.

Owner says " Every place has roaches in Fla. and will spray" Dh REFUSES to go back-- the owner only refuns 2 nites before they spray and sticks with all places have roaches.
Our new place did NOT- we checked behind fridge. The neighbor said this statement from him was ridiculuos. He only charged us $70/nite for 3 bedroom 3 bath with pool b/c he felt bad. SUCH nice couple

Be honest-- do u REALLY believe all places have roaches in Fla?? and would u stay in place u saw roaches???

We stayed at a Windsor Palm condo and it had no roaches. Only things that flew in when the kids left the door open (DS6 & DS4). It was clean, well kept and bug free.

I wouldn't believe him either. Maybe he has a high tolerance of roaches, but I can't stand them and have lived in many apartment buildings that were roach free.

That's not an acceptable answer. Board of Health inquiry maybe? Sorry you had such a rotten experience.

Sorry to hear. Our home is less than 2 years old and backs conservation land with lots of creepy crawlies. ;-) It it "plumbed" throughout the walls and slab with lines for bug and termite control. When we first moved in we were finding palmetto bugs, spiders and earwigs.( still better than the poisonous Bark Scorpions we found the first night in the house in Vegas.Ran to a hotel for that one.) The lines were not hooked up to the outlet outside where the pest control is sprayed in:mad: ) Fixed in 5 minutes and have not had a problem since.

Yes there are bugs everywhere in a tropical zone and the occasional one gets by the lines of defense only to be taken care of by one of the family felines. However, it sounds like you are getting an excuse. An occasional bug in the house doesn't equal a possible infestation(finding live ones behind the fridge) Sounds like someone is cutting corners on spraying and cleaning up the crumbs.:(

Hi I hope all Florida homes do NOT have roaches. Having said that. I rented a place in Clearwater for 1 month March 07. The 1st night we were there I saw 1 BIG bug in the cupboard. I killed it. I don't like to kill anything!!! but I am from Canada and our bugs don't grow so big. Anyhow, for the entire month, I did not see another bug at all. So, then we rented a place at Indian Creek, nice clean, beautiful, home but in our 6 day stay I have to say there was this HUGE big black bug, could be a roach??? in the sink, my kids killed it and I screamed the whole time. (theyr'e older). That was the 1 and only bug we saw but they are scary if your not used to them. OH I have to add we came home 1 night and I had a little lizard in my ensuite bathroom. I have to guess it came in with the new carpet just prior to our arrival. The boys captured it and returned it outside. But it probably was in there since we got there. Anyway, I just felt like telling my story. I am sorry your vacation came with these problems but I am glad it worked out for you.

Florida is loaded with bugs.
With that being said it is up to the owner to pay for pest control and keep his home pest free.

If you see a large one that's ok. They are water bugs after all and are just coming in for some water. If you see little ones that's an infestation.

I know they are icky but they are a fact of life here.

I would have left too. Ugh.
My inlaws live in Fl and yes, there are many bugs in Fl, but not EVERY house has roaches. That's gross. i'm sorry that happened to you. :headache:

His comment is way over the top - we have stayed in a number of places and never had roaches! Now as owners we pay Pest Control each month so that our home remains bug free - I'm sure most owners do.

I've never seen roaches in any place we've stayed in Orlando. Our next trip will be our 12th. This has been in hotels, condos and 4 private pool homes.

We did once get ants in a pool home. By the 2nd or 3rd day, there was a trail from outside to under the table for just a few crumbs. We cleaned them up and started sweeping under the table after the kids would eat and they never came back.

I am sorry you had a problem.

As everyone has said before, there are bugs in FL. It is a fact of life there. Owners should have pest control service. Even with pest control, sometimes you still get occasional issues which are not necessarily the sign of a bad home. We have been in that situation! A quick call to the management company should have got the issue handled. They should have had pest control in to do a thorough job of both the inside and outside of the home. However most pest control companies only work Mon-Fri so if you have an issue outside of that time, it is up to the management company to temporarily sort out the initial issue and then get the pest control in as soon as possible on the next available work day.

The Palmetto/Water Bugs do get into homes, even with pest treatment, they just get through small cracks. If you see some, it is not necessarily an infestation. If you see them dead or dying, it shows that the pest control is actually working.

Hello,

We just got back from our home at Windsor Palms... we had 2 roaches that came in when we unloaded the cars through the garage at night. (Both near the garage entrance). I also saw them outside the house after dark. These are normal for FL and our property owner assured me that they pay to spray the outside of the homes weekly for pests.

I also saw some earwigs near the end of our trip in the bathrooms... these are harmless bugs much smaller than the roaches. They come in looking for water. Again, these are normal for FL.

Other than that, our home was bug free.

Water bugs ARE cockroaches!

Yes they are. Palmetto, Cockroaches, whatever you want to call them are WATER BUGS. They crave water. Florida is nothing but water, swamp and sand.

They do not mean that a place is filthy. Again, if they are big ones they are fine. Doesn't mean that you will see 100's. You will see one or two in the bathroom or kitchen. Smaller ones are infestations and they can be found in any room. If the home is sprayed you will find dead or dying ones.

I've lived here 3 years and don't know a single person that hasn't had a sighting of one in their home especially when we need rain as badly as we do.

When I first moved here I had an exterminator who hated me cause I called every time I saw one even outside on my porch. He explained about the whole big bug versus little ones and I finally got it.

We have lizards, snakes and cockroaches. They live here full time, year round. Don't let it ruin your vacation. Just grab a paper towel, chase it down and flush it. If you see little ones call your management company or owner. Trust me, you will know the difference between a big one and a little one.

Even though it rained a little each day we were there, you can tell by looking at the Palm trees that there is a significant need for water. It makes sense that the bugs are searching for water.

Also, don't play with the lizards or frogs while you are there... they are both small and cute, but the lizards bite and some frogs are posionious.

We stayed 11 days in a villa surrounded by lake and woods and never had a bug.

Had a lizard in the pool and a skunk near the fence and raccoons in the trash though

we just came back from orange lake and I found a huge roach on our bed one day and NO there were no crums or anything we don`t eat in bed.:rolleyes1 : the place was very clean and I did get upset but to be honest coming from a very warm tropical place I can tell you it`s almost imposible not to run into a roach once in a while..no matter what you do!:sad2:

Not all places have roaches in Fl . My old house in fl didn't have them ....

As previous posters have said, you can run into one on occasion, but finding several of them tells you that the owner isn't taking care of the place properly (maybe only spraying on a complaint basis ;) ). I'm glad the neigbor helped you out though! :thumbsup2

OP-sorry that you had that experience. I have to say in all our trips to Florida we haven't seen any in our condo or any resort hotel we've stayed at. I think I would have passed out...I can cope with a gator in the house more than I could a roach. If they are a fact of life down there, then I seriously have to reconsider my retirement plans. Glad you were able to get some help and better accomodations from the neighbor.
