Hi
If I buy a Riviera contract (resale),, does it mean that I can only stay there?
Thanks

Yep! Which also means you’ll really want to book at the 11-month window before it books up.

It’s assumed that direct points will get access to future resorts. That may be true, but doesn’t have to be.

Worth noting that future DVC don’t have to be DVC at all. If Disney wanted to do Star Wars VC for the Star Wars hotel or whatever, they could and would be able to limit buy in from older resorts.

They haven’t done that yet, but they hadn’t limited resale yet either.

Technically, all DVC resorts would be limited to their own resort if DVC decided to remove them from BVTC. You are only guaranteed your home resort.

I doubt they will ever be selling direct points, including RIV, that won’t be good at all the options available. The whole purchase of the resale restrictions is to make direct points a different product.

One of the reasons to always buy where you don’t mind staying.

To OP, fi you know you want RIV, one option would be to buy RIV on the resale market and then buy another DVC resort that trades with the others,

Of course, resale points are not good at any future resorts, but it is a way to get both RIV and other options without going and paying the direct route.

I mean it’s a nice idea, but Disney is about money, not being nice. I can totally picture an elite DVC class with the Star Wars VC or whatever, and only Star Points can be used everywhere. People seem to care so much about their Blue Cards and their status, it makes sense to me.

And I’d buy into the Star Wars hotel sight unseen LOL.

They have already shown they are not tied to the old business model and could do anything. The assumption that future resorts or points will behave like the current ones is an assumption.

Well, then everything with DVC is an assumption other than being able to stay at your home resort.

While they sure could come up with a brand new concept, I think it is a stretch to suggest that they will begin selling direct points that are restricted.

Riviera resale contracts do not belong to the Disney Vacation Club. If one buys Riviera resale, he's just buying one single resort.
I would argue that, according to the definition in the Florida law, even Riviera direct doesn't belong to a vacation club, because access to the reservation component is not part of the core product that is passed when the contracts is resold. It's like Riviera is a standalone resort with a perk for direct buyers to trade into DVC.

For me, one of the big things that differentiated DVC from "other timeshares" was the ability to be flexible about not only when you go, but where you stay. I would be much less interested in a product that ties you to a specific resort.

That’s true, but with all the choices, one can buy RIV and then another one that gives trading into the L14.

I certainly will be looking next year to pick up some RIV resale points...DH and I decided not to buy now even though I saw the perfect contract...

We don’t need it given all the extra points we have from canceled 2020 trips so waiting does make sense.

But, DVD deciding to change the pro duct drastically with RIV was interesting move on their part.

Can I add on resale points to a direct contract?

If I purchase resale deal (same resort/UY) than my direct one conditions, then those will be added and considered as one contract for making reservations, right?

will this also apply to reserve Riviera with such “enhanced” contract or disney will control the original direct points separately?

thanks

Yes. Be sure to title the resale contract exactly the same as the direct contract and make sure your broker/closing company knows you want the resale contract adde4d to your membership.

Yes, but the resale points will not be eligible to book any of the options in the Disney, Concierge or Adventures by Disney Collections. They will also NOT be valid to book at Riviera or any future DVC resorts. Resale points are eligible to trade via RCI.

DVC will keep track of the points separately for resort booking eligibility, but the resale and direct points will be combined seamlessly for anything both sets of points are eligible to book.

Just to clarify, you never add points to a contract, only to a membership.

So, if you buy more points with the same UY, and titled the same way, they will go into the same membership,

Points are the ones that carry the restrictions and not the owner so whatever is bought follow their own rules, regardless of what else is owned.
