I'm worried about my resort choice. We are currently booked at Riverside, but I'm considering changing to FQ. Here's my group-myself, my husband (in our early 30s), and our 5 and 3 year old boys (at the time). In addition to us, my father is going (he will have his own room-don't worry, we're not trying to cheat the system or anything). He is in his mid 60s and has Parkinson's, along with spinal stenosis, for which he recently had surgery. Mobility may be an issue for him at the time, hard to tell since we are still several months out and he is still regaining stamina from his surgery. We have booked garden view rooms at Riverside and are not willing to pay for preferred. I am concerned about the walk to bus stops and to the food court for him. Would you switch? Is there a better or worse chance of room only discounts at either of these?

We always travel with my parents, and my dad has some definite mobility issues which cause him quite a bit of pain. We always stay at POFQ. We always request connecting rooms as close as possible to the food court and bus stop. We have usually had good luck. Even if they did completely ignore your request, and put you in the farthest possible room, you're still in a better position than many of the rooms at Riverside. We did stay at Riverside once (due to no free dining available at FQ). I really liked Riverside, but my dad had a really hard time with the walking. I did a lot of "running" on that trip. I would go fill his mug in the morning and at night, and even at times brought food back to the room from the food court because it was just too much for him to walk up there.

Since you asked about discounts.... it has historically been much tougher to get discounts at FQ than at Riverside. However, it seems lately Riverside has also been excluded from certain discounts, so it's really hard to say.

I would go with POFQ. When you make a reservation have them note that your Dad may have mobility issues. When you check in you can always ask for a room closer to the food court/bus stop. As for your boys, they may enjoy the POFQ pool (I believe it's geared toward younger kids). IF not, you are welcome to walk over to POR and use their pool-it's one of the perks of staying at POFQ.

You guys are confirming what I was thinking. I'm concerned about discounts, though. I've always heard Caribbean beach is super spread out, and I think Coronado was totally booked (must be a convention as we are going during very low crowds).

I would see if there was availability at pofq also.
If not, por is not toooo spread out;don't worry.

I would try POFQ. It is a much more compact resort. The difference in cost between room views really isn't much at POFQ. Since it is much smaller than POR, coming across discounts may be quite a bit more difficult.

I would avoid CSR. It is very spread out with a large lake in the middle with a bridge that doesn't go across the middle of the lake. So walking from the room at CSR to the feature pool, the food court, etc. could be quite a hike. POR may actually be a little larger than CSR, but I find it much easier to walk around. There are much more convenient bridges, etc. across the Sassagoula at POR. If you can't find a room at POFQ, I'd just stick with POR. If it so happens that they only have 1 room available at POFQ, you could give that one to Dad, and walk (or boat) from POR to POFQ to meet up with him to go to parks, etc. It's probably about a 5-10 minute walk (for you) from POR to POFQ. The price of rooms between the two resorts is usually nearly the same.

As for buses, all the moderate resorts, except POFQ, have multiple bus stops, so it's not too much of a hike to get to a bus. POFQ is small enough that it only need its one bus stop.

I would go POFQ, I have had really bad luck at POR, they don't see to understand what is needed, even if you tell them. And it is very spread out if you have issues. My mom is blind and we requested preferred, before they had that catagory. They put us in the last manor, in the middle of the back. There are flowers, bushes, gardens, stairs, and hiding elevators, it was awful, we had to wait three days to be moved. We tried again two years later and the results were not much better.

At POFQ we requested what we wanted and why, a week before we got there, sent a fax letter, and both times had the best room we could have asked for. No we were not the closest to the bus or food court, but then again that is not what I asked for, I assumed they would have though because mom was blind. They gave us the end room near the dock in building 2 once and the next one same room in building 5. We did not have to go thru gardens, or fences to get to the room. We had extra windows, so what little shadows mom can see she did. We were less than 3 minutes from food court, one minute from doc to dtd, and 3 minutes from bus, and one minute from pool. For the first and only time ever, we got Braille instructions in our room, for the phone and for the safe and for evacuation. We have stayed DL and WDW every year for 20 more years and have stayed at three Disney resorts since then and this is the only resort to ever give Braille information, and we gave up asking for it 20 years ago, so we did not even ask. When we went to the front desk for anything during our stay they ask if the room was working out for us or if we needed to change. The second day we complained just a little about the bus, not that it was not good, but twice the bus drivers did not let my mom on with the w/c people, and the had a hard time with the squeezing of the people ( when blind this can be very scary), the front desk people called and fo the next week my mom was allowed on the bus first and got her seat every time, and also the bus drivers mad a point to make sure she was sitting on the way back, (I know we are all tired but a blind women has a hard time on a crowded bus when standing).

I am sure there are other resorts that are great and we just have not checked them off our bucket list yet, but POFQ went way above any other resort we have ever stayed at. F I were you, I would ask for a standard veiw, at POFQ they are all nice views and I would asked for the back side of building 3 or 4, yes you will be near the parking lot, but that gets you close to the bus stops and really close to the food court, which would be slightly closer to building 4. There is a map on touring plans if you want to request very specific, and this is one hotel that will allow very specific.

The other reason I would go POFQ, if you have to share buses, POFQ is first picked up and first dropped off, so you are more likely in am to get a seat on the bus with the little ones. Sometime POR and POFQ share the buses, so you want to be first on. Also there is only one bus stop at POFQ, and 4 at POR and there is no way to say who will get picked up first, POFQ and outer buildings of POR or POFQ and main building of POR. And you may have to wait several buses if full and if grandpa needs a w/c and there are already two on bus you have to wait even if bus is empty.

Have a great time.

We definitely prefer POFQ when it comes to convenience - bus stop, main building, pool, everything is centrally located and not too far from anything.

POFQ would be my pick also, you should be able to get a building close to the dining area and all the building are semi close not all spear out like POR.

I agree pofq is a wonderful resort.
We shall be there in 2 weeks time!!!!!

I find it disgraceful Braille information had never been provided for your mom previously.
She must've been thrilled.

The transport issue also-I can't understand how there were even issues which needed resolving.
I'm not in a wheelchair or scooter-however have various issues and require a seat when travelling.
We hire a car & rarely use buses; though when we have been on buses we've (perhaps been lucky) and not encountered problems.
The only hiccup was on the monorail to Mk,fortunately not had any other problems.

I have stayed at both resorts multiple times and prefer POR. I like the grounds better, the food court is better IMO and it has quiet pools. However. When my children were little the POFQ pool was great for them and is easier to see them at all angles from as a parent. Also for your dad's needs it definitely gives you a greater chance of been close to the food court and bus stop because it is a tiny resort. Personally with your stated needs I would pay the minimal difference for a preferred room at POR. As you don't want to do that I would choose POFQ as this will almost certainly be better for your dad.

POFQ is nice and compact which sounds like it would be a good fit with your group.

I'd definitely say Stick with it..This resort is gorgeous....Plenty of amenities too. Not that POFQ is bad, because it isn't but POR is just far and away much better IMHo..Only 2nd to CSR..

The walks are not far at all to be honest. Everything is virtually centrally located.. The pool area is waay better here than POFQ, the Lounge w/ Yeehaw Bob's is super fun, the QS area & the TS are very nice as well both with great food choices. The only thing that POFQ has , is it's shear small size of the resort, Which I personally think is a drawback... Either route you take, I'm sure you'll have a great time..:thumbsup2

As someone who also has mobility and stamina issues, I would also recommend POFQ over POR or the other mods, unless you are able to pay for a preferred room. I have never gotten a request granted at POR, and had problems hiking from the food court to our room. The compact nature of POFQ was ideal for me. And I do think your children are the right ages to really enjoy the pool there.

I would like to add one more thing about your father. Even if his surgery is a complete success, he will still face stamina problems due to the Parkinson's. I would strongly recommend that he look into renting an ecv from an outside agency for the duration of the trip. They will deliver and pick up from your resort, and he will have 24/7 use of it - at the resort and in the parks. With one of these, the size of the resort becomes much less a factor for him. You can find a lot of info on ecv use at WDW on the DisAbilities forum.

Have stayed at both and love both for different reasons. For your situation I would switch to POFQ. Request a close building. You can't beat the proximity to the bus stop. The resort is beautiful. And your kids are young and will probably get a kick out of the pool and slide. My kids are a little older and were slightly bored with POFQ pool so we did walk over to POR a few times. But you can also take the boat which is lovely.

Additionally we loved the small size of POFQ. We were in building 5 right by the pool but facing the green. We were two minutes from the bus stop and food court. Less to pool and river. It was nice in the evenings we took the kids to swim and could easily run up to room if needed.

We are debating the ecv. He is definitely getting one at the parks, but we figured that would make buses more difficult. Are we wrong? I do think having it at the resort will help. I am dreading having it and a stroller since we will be our own parade.

I will readily concede that POR has the better food court; IMHO the best food court on WDW property.

For the situation you are describing, POFQ is IDEAL.

_I_ would not switch to CBR or CSR if you are *not* willing to pay for a preferred room (given your circumstances.)

And I agree with PPer that POR is not *that* spread out.

Definitely switch to POFQ. It will be a better fit for your family. We have stayed at both and prefer POFQ by far because of the small resort size.

We love POFQ because of its size. We don't have major mobility issues (years of soccer and the military have beaten up my knees pretty good) but if we did it would be an ideal resort to stay at. Even if you are at the two furthest buildings away (1 & 7) you would still be closer to the bus stop, food court, DTD boat, pool and lobby than you would be at any of the other moderates.

I have stayed at all but one of the moderates (Cabins at Ft. Wilderness) and each has its own positives and negatives.

POFQ would be my recommendation for you. If that's helpful?!? :)
