It closed back in 2001, and it's just decaying away (someone posted pictures recently, and you can also see it from the Windows Live Local close-ups). There are no plans announced or (seriuously) rumored for this location.

Wow. That is so, so very sad to me. This was my first waterpark I ever visited back in the 70's. I miss this place so much. It was probably the last pool/waterpark I ever went to where my mom was still healthy enough and wanted to participate in playing with us (then) kids in the water. I have so many fond memories of this place, and seeing the wood rot and the water filling up with algae, etc. almost brings me to tears. Seeing how plain FW's pool is, it would be awesome if WDW would wall River Country's water up from Bay Lake, chlorinate it, and refurbish or reconstruct the existing slides, T-bar, etc. for FW campers' use. That would give me a lot of incentive to stay in one of the FW cabins.
There is an island in the middle of Bay Lake. Disney first opened the island as Treasure Island. It soon changed the name to Discovery Island and opened a small zoo. The island is still there obviously, but isn't open to tourists.

If you click on the River C link in my post to the Local.Live then click on the bottom center box it will bring up TI or DI and it still shows some of the buildings on it.
That was my first water park also. I think we went there in 1980...my dad just dragged pics out from our trip at Christmas and we were talking about how "cool" that water park was. It's a shame it can't be used somehow.
HOW SAD! we went in the early 80's and had a really great time! I suppose it would cost too much to re-furbish it and bring it back to life although I can't imagine Disney not doing SOMETHING with it. Seems like there is a good chunk of land going to waste! Helen
