Ripped off by Sears?

Bought a 'Maytag' washer from Sears over a year ago. Have had a repairman out already. Last week it started making a real loud, almost unbearable noise. The washing part works but the noise is awful. Husband decided it was something to do with the water pump on the machine so he took the part into the local Maytag shop to replace the part. He was informed we don't really have a true Maytag - probably a Hotpoint or similar. I looked at the books we got with the machine and they are generic - don't say Maytag. I believe we were ripped off. Maybe Maytag bought Hotpoint or whatever but when you think you are buying a Maytag, that is what you hope you end up with!

Sorry, had to vent! :furious:

Hotpoint is made by General Electric.

A Maytag washer could be made by Maytag, Amana, or Whirlpool, depending on model and age. Whirlpool owns Maytag now.

Actually, there are a lot of brands but only a few manufacturers. It gets pretty confusing.

Here's a really handy (and enlightening) chart that lists who makes what brands: http://www.appliance411.com/purchase/make.shtml

Maytag only makes some of their appliances - that is normal with appliance companies, from what we were told. Has nothing to do with Sears - Maytag is a brand name (just like Kenmore, Whirlpool, etc). Many of the appliance companies have other brands manufacturer their machines, esp on the low end models.

We have a Maytag - we bought it from Best Buy. Right after our 2 year warranty ran out, it did the same thing you described. It was the braking package (we had it looked at by a serviceman). We opted to not fix it since the braking package and labor was about $150 and we could buy a new model for not much more than that. The washer still worked, it just was incredibly loud and vibrated across the room =)

We went and bought a Kenmore made by Whirlpool. We now ask anytime we buy an appliance WHO made the appliance - we don't go by the brand name. Our Maytag washer was not made by Maytag, either, it was just the Maytag brand.

I hate it when stuff breaks right after the warranty runs out. :furious:

I'm just saying that the label "Maytag" is on the wash machine but when we gave the model number to the "Maytag" service store, they said "that's not Maytag". We thought we were buying a Maytag - you know, where the repairman is so lonely because of the quality in Maytag they never need get to do any repairs???

Our Maytag just bit the dust yesterday. It is only about 8 years old!

My dryer, which I bought at a yard sale for $60 11 years ago still is working like a jewel!

the 1st Maytag we sent back after a week--it didn't switch from one part of the cyle to the other. they sent out another brand new washer, & we had to have it repaired a few days later--same problem.

That said my Mom's Maytag--made in the early '60's--lived 20 years, worked fine & she gave it away because she needed a smaller machine.
No more Maytags for us!

Sounds more like you were "ripped off" by Maytag, not Sears (although, I wouldn't call a piece of equipment breaking a "rip off" -- it's just an unfortunate circumstance). Sears just sells the stuff. Maytag put their name on it and boxed it up with their name on the box. It's up to Maytag to stand behind their products. If it is beyond the warranty period, that's even more unfortuntate, but stuff happens. :confused3
