RIP Malcolm Jamal-Warner

I was shocked and saddened to hear this on the way home from work. An actor that I enjoyed following from The Cosby show to most recently his role on The Resident. May his family be comforted by many happy memories with him.

My goodness Dan, you might be the only person on the planet that didn't see The Cosby Show. It's still playing in syndication now, but in the 80's it was required viewing. I know that current knowledge concerning Mr. Cosby has dampened the desire for people to watch it which is to bad because it cuts down on the income of the other actors that were on the show.
Yeah, I know. I never did watch the Cosby Show, 1st run or reruns. I'm not much for the weekly sitcoms and zero for the so-called "reality" shows. Those make me nauseous. I'm more of a Columbo, Mission Impossible, Combat type guy.

If you want to watch just one episode to see Malcolm Jamal Warner as a young actor, it has to be season 1 episode 5, A Shirt Story. One of my favorite episodes of the whole series.

Well that was some heartbreakingly sad news to read I’m very sad
My condolences to his family what a horrible horrible accident
Such sad news

Our local news just showed an interview they did with him recently, where he talked about how he knew even at 16 that he didn't want the height of his success to be for a role at 16. For him, he said,
his sights had always been life after Cosby.

"My perspective on success because
people would misconstrue the popularity of the Cosby show as my being successful as a teenager. And I was always very clear that, you know, success for me it wouldn't be until I was 40, 50, 60 years old still working consistently as an actor as a director that I could look back and say I've had a successful career.
So now in my 50s I'm embracing like, "Oh wow, yeah, I have had a successful career. But there's still there's still a lot of, you know, life left. Yeah.
You know, and there's still bills that have to be paid and a daughter that has to be raised. So it's been a great journey and I'm excited about the journey ahead as well."

Here he is, cued up to that spot. :sad1:

Very sad news. He was a talented kid on The Cosby Show and made the successful transition from child actor to adult roles. RIP, MJW.

Also Season 2, Episode 22 'Theo's Holiday' - always makes me crack up.
Another great scene is from the pilot episode, when Theo gets a lesson about money from his dad.

I remember when everything started coming out about Cosby. The reruns were immediately pulled from TV. Malcolm and the rest of the cast stopped getting those checks. To make ends meet, Malcolm took a job a a grocery store. Somebody recognized him, took his picture and mocked him on social media. 🤬 If I remember correctly BET TV gave him a job so he wouldn't have to work at a grocery store.

Any J. Michael Straczynski fans here? Warner was very good in "Jeremiah," co-starring with Luke Perry.

(If you don't know who JMS is and you like sci-fi, go find "Babylon 5" immediately!)

I actually heard this in the car on the way to someone else's memorial service today, so I'm not sure I even properly absorbed it. His poor family (and castmates as well) 😢

That wasn’t Malcolm. You’re thinking of Geoffrey Owens, the actor who played son-in-law Elvin on the show. He was working at a Trader Joe’s in New Jersey, and as you say, was shamed on social media, which prompted offers of acting jobs from several television producers, including Tyler Perry.

That wasn't Malcolm. That was actor Geoffrey Owens, who played the boyfriend to the oldest Huxtable daughter.

He's still having a hard time making ends meet.
