Today we lost one of our budgies, Jake. He had been a member of our flock since June 2002.
The last couple of days he had gotten real puffy and wanted to be by himself. I thought maybe "he" was really a "she" and was about to have some eggs - I had seen some of the other budgies mounting him/her but I am not sure if the males try it with other males..??
Earlier today he was still eating, but by late afternoon he was on the bottom of the cage with his wings spread out. Again, I thought maybe eggs were coming.
I got another smaller cage and put him in it so he could be alone. When I lfted him out his feet weren't working (they were curled up) and he felt so light. This is a bird who would bite when you tried to pick him up. I left him alone for a while and then went up to sit by the cage. I was stroking his head and talking softly to him. Then the weirdest thing happened....he gave a big stretch...and then rolled over dead!
I am sad but I am glad I was there for him when he passed. I was downstairs watching tv with the family but then something "made" me go upstairs. Weird, huh?
So now I have a dead bird in a box in the other room. We don't know when to tell the kids. My DS11 is an aspergers kid and if we tell him now we will have a rough night getting him to sleep. If we tell him in the morning it will be rough getting him off to school. We lost our cat of 17 years a couple months back and he was devastated. Not sure how he will take this but I know he will be sad. I feel sad as he was one of my favorites...
Sigh. I love my pets (all 17..now 16..) of them, but it is so sad when they pass...
