RIP Filenes, Marshall Fields, et al

Meier and Frank here....went to Macy's officially last weekend.

All of Portland is unhappy.

When I FIRST moved here, from CA, I would have been excited about Macy's I guess cause I was used to it....wasn't sure about M and F. But I became a diehard M and F fan, loved their buyers. I have walked thru Macy's 3 times now and hate the clothes. :sad2:

I'm still mourning the loss of Hudson's. Hudson's was changed years ago to Marshall Fields and is now Macy's. Doesn't matter...I still call it Hudson's ;)

YES, J.J. Newbury's and then like you said McCrory's....I'd forgotten about those also......while we are on memory lane :goodvibes I remember when Zayre's first opened their chain, and in the NE area, Bradlees....wow, lots of stores have come and gone

Yep, loosing our Famous-Barr. :sad2: For years this was the only department store charge I had!!! Our Famous is now a Macy's...when they put in those price-check machines, my heart broke into a thousand pieces!! :sad2:

:rotfl: No Kidding!! I had no idea they were taking over this many stores. Here, our Famous Barr's (which were in every mall) have turned into Macy's. We have two Lord and Taylor's and I'm not sure what's happening with those since there will already be Macy's in both of those malls.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I'm not sure if this was already posted. Macy's, I believe, bought the entire May Co. (www.mayco.com), so they get to change all of their stores to Macy's. And from what I'd read about the whole thing, if there is already a Macy's in a location where a May Co. store is (ie, same mall), they will select the better of the two locations and let the other location go (stop leasing that space).

poor Chicago. I'm not an overly sentimental person, but there is a part of me that feels just terrible over no more Marshall Fields Christmas window.

I agree. I'll miss the Fields windows. We once took the kids when they were little to eat under the Christmas tree. We've even taken the kids to see the Fields Santa. It won't be the same.

Does anyone know if they're supposed to keep the traditions...like the restaurant/tree, the Santa village, etc?

Your mom sounds like my MIL. Did she refer to it as Filenes (with the short i sound), not Feyelenes? My MIL still pronounces it that way.

My mom actually dropped the 'i'....made it more like a Flene's!!! So many stores gone. Not leaving us much choice nowadays, are they?!
