Good plan. We're with the commonwealth and the rate they give us is hovering around 99c . If it hits parity I think I'll have to go down and buy some more cash. Won't be able to help myself there either!:hyper:

I go off line for 2 days..count them..one, two....and you people let her back into the pool...:duck:
now back to worshiping the dollar at 1.04:yay:

How high do you wait till you exchange $$$$. Is $1.04 pretty good or should I wait???

$1.04 is pretty good, and last november, when i exchanged my $$, the $ was trading at $1.04, the exchange rate was $1 : $1.02, which means i still made money...

this year, it seems that although the $$ is trading at $1.04, the financial institutions and bureaux de change are only exchanging at around $1 : $0.99, which seems crazy....

i am waiting for the actual exchange rate to hit about $1: $1 or higher before i convert mine ... :rolleyes2

$1.04 is an all time high - of course it is good!

Who knows where it goes from here -if you have the money, buy some now. !

Im ringing hubby and will get him to swap some asap. Today hopefully :)

Thanks for your reply :thumbsup2

Hello everyone!

My two girls and I were given a surprise trip to Disneyland by the girls' Grandpa! We are so excited and I think it's fair to say that I am even more excited than the girls! :) I visit Disboards daily and am learning and enjoying it all so much! I do have one question though, about exchanging money. I have travelled very little so really have no idea about how to go about changing Aussie dollars to US dollars. We're not going until the end of the year but it's looking like a good time to get some cash. Do I just go to a major bank and exchange? Do I have to call first to arrange for the bank to have the currency available (it would only be an exchange of about $500)? Is there a place other than the bank that would give a better exchange?

Sorry if these questions are a little dumb  but you all seem really nice here so I thought it'd be safe to ask... :)

welcome to our little slice of heaven on the boards.....:wave2:

just wait till the others come on, they'll set you straight..not only on cash but accommodation, packages, airfare etc etc etc...they really are a "special" bunch:duck:

once again...welcome & good luck ::yes::

for those of you who live/ work in sydney's inner west/west, I exchange my aud to usd at Strathfield...the money exchanges there have no commission and practically give you what the rate is...have saved heaps.:firefight

so look for a community that has a high immigrant population, they have some great little money exchanges as they do such high volume trades @ highly competitive rates..:thumbsup2

oh and you can get great sushi in strathfield as well :)

Welcome to the boards that's awesome to be given a trip, I like using Aust Post you can check the rates online they have no commission on there cash or travel cards, I also check travelex online not the stores but they only have no commission if you bpay and then you just nominate where you want to pick it up

Welcome!

You're going to have so much fun planning your trip and you'll get some great advice and help here on the DIS :)

If you go to one of the larger banks, eg in a major shopping center they usually have plenty of Us$ on hand, don't usually need to order in advance. You can check their exchange rates and commission fees online and then compare to places like Aus Post and Travelex etc. I get mine commission free from the Commonwealth ( my DS works there) because their exchange rate is usually better than Aust Post and Travelex but they charge 1% commission normally so the others may be a better deal for you.

good luck!

If the USA stock market crashes our $ will drop initially right :confused3

Usually. that's what killed us on our trip in 2008. We flew over just at the time that Lehman Brothers fell over, and them Freddie May and Billy Mac or Betty Jo or whatever those other banks were.... :rotfl:

The dollar dived 20c in a week. It was very ugly :scared:

And yes I will try to think of :cake: now. Or maybe a cake with a pony on top? ;)
