Ridiculous...or maybe I'm just whining.

A few months ago my co-worker, Kaitlyn, had her party in the meeting room of the bowling alley where we work; there was some trouble with outside alcohol, and two of the off-duty employees there were written up due to this.

Anyway my problem: my boss (the owner) is refusing to rent me the party room for my birthday because of this. I mean I'm not an idiot, I know that one person can ruin it for everybody...but I am one of the best employees, I know I am because the managers and customers tell me all the time; as well as the owner. It's not like I'm expecting a discount or freebie; I just want to have the friggen party!! I feel I'm owed this because I work hard and am constantly doing favors for the place at request of my boss (which further shows my value). So what are your guys' thoughts on this? Am I being pathetic or should I get something?

P.S. I've been there 18 months next week...and I don't bowl, so benefits are scarce.

If there was a problem with an employee throwing a party there, and they formally introduced a new policy of 'no employee rentals of the party room', then i would say you are out of luck. And that they would be within their rights to do that.

If, however, they are just arbitrarily saying you cant do it, and then maybe in a couple months the problems arent as fresh in their mind, and they let someone else do it, I would definitely be pissed.

You're not expecting a discount or freebie and you don't bowl so I would just go elsewhere to rent a spot. The owner is probably looking at this as a conflict of interest, especially if there is going to be alcohol served. Employees and alcohol at the place of business that the employee works for, just sounds to conflicting to me. Of course, I am just speculating that there will be alcohol (our bowling alley has a bar/lounge) but perhaps if there wasn't my opinion would change.

Anyways, good luck in your hunt and happy birthday.

If you're doing favors as part of your job, as in "on-the-clock" (and depending on what these "favors" are ;)), then you're not owed anything, you have been already compensated in terms of your salary/wage.

Sorry love, I think that feeling "owed" is a dangerous emotion. You (I) work and do your job well so that you can keep it and because it gives you some satisfaction...not because your place of employment will owe you something in return...other than a paycheck.

Now, I understand being disappointed that you can't rent the room because someone else misused that trust...but those other emotions will cause you grief in the long run.

All good and valid points. But shouldn't I have the right to actual rental as a customer? Regardless of the incident, and there was nothing said after that time which banished employees use the room. However, givin your responses, I should book elsewhere party is scheduled a month from today and I don't want to miss the opportunity.
