Ride the rails much? Need Amtrak help

I was trying to check into the possibility of taking an Amtrak train to NY or NJ this Feb. for DD's 16th birthday. Have never done Amtrak before and didnt know if there were great deals to be had or not. I checked their site and it was like $183 for a round trip ticket. I dont want to pay that much. Does anyone know of discounts or a place to get discount codes? We are in VA and would travel out of Staunton or Clifton Forge to NY or NJ. Thanks for any words of wisdom or help that you can give me.

The thing with Amtrak is you must book in advance, we booked one adult and one child back in August- NYC to Orlando for the prime dates of Pres week. Feb 18 to 25th for a total of $260.

I peruse their web site and watch under "hotDeals". I've seem tickets there from Ohio to Chicago for $37.50. Just have to watch that and other promotions. We use Amtrak from Ohio to WDW and for my wife and I , round trip, its never more than $420.00 for the 2 of us.

Try logging on to FlyerTalk.com they have an Amtrak Guest Reward site with Promo codes. These have helped me many times..Love the train!!!

Blessedby3, it's important that you read the post again. $37.50 was from Ohi to Chicago. You're really not likely to find an Amtrak fare like that from New Jersey to Florida. On the other hand, Amtrak does sometimes have sales, like, buy one get one half off, or, buy two get the third free - ALWAYS for passengers travelling together when they do offer deals.
