Ride Photos

Although that makes sense to me in theory, how would you determine when a good time is to use the flash with a slow shutter speed? I guess it's a case of just playing around and finding what works and what doesn't (?)

For example, I tend to use the flash a lot outdoors to help with issues with shadows. But say , for instance the Splash Mountain photo Mom2rtk posted - I would have thought that using a flash would have allowed too much light in and risked blowing out parts of the picture ... No? I'm not challenging your statement and hope it doesn't look that way. I am genuinely clueless!

It's all a matter of balancing ambient and flash light. Remember, your photograph is nothing more than a reflection of light on your subject. Blur happens when the light is on your subject long enough for something to move while the shutter is open.

If the light on your subject comes from your flash, then it's likely to be sharp because the flash duration is shorter than the shutter speed. Doesn't matter if the shutter remains open longer if there isn't much light on it. However, if there is enough ambient light hitting your subject, then you risk blur with a long shutter speed.

One of the ways around that is to use Rear-Sync Flash. When the flash goes off at the end of the exposure, the last impression on your sensor is a sharp one, due to the flash.

As you said, it's best to practice and get a feel for how it works.

Wow! I haven't seen that rain sleeve before! Do you have a filters on to protect your lens? Do you hide the camera when you splash down?

No filter. I just pointed it down between my legs at the last minute and threw a plastic bag over it.

On my first few trips down I was too chicken and didn't far enough into the drop. On some trips down I shot too many too fast and filled the buffer. It took me the first trip down to decide I needed to use the wide angle lens for better odds of getting what I wanted. I played with settings the rest of the time. It seems a time or two I forgot and left the ISO too high from shooting the interior scenes. I think I finally went with auto ISO to have one less thing to fuss with. The hairdo's happened late in the week and were just the perfect icing on the cake.
