Ride Contest Rant - It's a Game! With Real People, Remember?

I have to agree, being able to lock your room completely - while under construction - should be an option.

I joined a slide team. I started building. Here is my observation.

Before this ride competition started, I never had someone just pop into my room to say hello. The second I put, "under construction, please do not enter" on my room title, however, multiple people popped in and then disappeared without so much as a hello.

PixieDusted, I did restrict my access to friends only - however still found people on opposing teams popping in and out. I didn't go as far as deleting them because I figured if they had to see that badly - they needed some creative help...LOL! :)

What's wrong with sending a message or waiting until someone building a room is out and about in the game. Why is it necessary to enter in a room RIGHT at that moment, when it is clearly asking for privacy? I know that I am constantly out and about in the game earning credits, doing quests, etc. It would seem the polite and proper thing to do, when I am politely asking for some privacy, would be to just respect my request. This way - no feelings are hurt.

I'm having fun building my room and would never EVER go out looking in someone's room to snoop. I want my creation to be just that, MY creation and I want to be proud of it in the end, win, loose or even not even judged.

I do have to agree somewhat with Jegrezo here. It is extremely frustrating to those of us NOT on a team (and that was MY choice). I hate logging into VMK now and seeing my friends list full of "Not in any room" and "Please do not enter!" Pink is a social butterfly - I solely go on to "flit" with my friends.

BUT I also respect the privacy of my friends (even though it frustrates me). There has only been ONE TIME that I actually entered a room that said, "don't enter or I will boot" and that was only because I messaged Daviedude PRIOR to entering to obtain his permission first.

Have fun my fellow DIS friends, but don't forget to take a break now and then and socialize with us "lesser peeps". :teeth:

Not lesser Pink, just single focused for a short while. Sometimes it's difficult to switch gears when you are focusing on something like creating a ride.

It's a little tricky out there in VMK right now to visit with friends that are on a team, even if it's players on the same team. I was visiting with Briar last night and managed to get in the way several times while she worked on her room. Sorry Briar, it was an oops moment. I try to message before going to players room on a everyday bases normally. Why would I stop now? I only drop in on my Zeta Pal, Mickeysfriend without sending her a message first but we have that kind of friendship. By the end of the week the worst will be over. You can visit me. I finished my room and am ready to play.

While I do agree it's just a game, I also believe if people want some privacy we should respect this. To me it's not a reflection of their friendship and if we are indeed friends, they should understand.

I don't keep a friends list in VMK just for this reason. It's nearly impossible to talk to everyone and I have hurt the feeling of posters here on the DIS because I was away or busy and they thought I just didn't want to talk to them.

I have to agree 100% with Disney Dreams here. These last few days, I have tried to come in contact with some of my friends, but they are always in those "Get out or I boot" Rooms. I have to tell the owner that I am not on a ride team to then only get booted three seconds later.

Why not contact them via the message option? My room is not about secrecy - I am not there to hang out, but to work. I don't have time to chat, really, and when I do, I will seek my friends out who are not working when I can hang out. It is virtually impossible to build a ride when people jump on it, or to move furniture around a very crowded room with people in it. It's about respecting the room owner's wishes that no one enter - plain and simple.

I really am in favor of the ride competitions.I think it shows VMK players at their best. The competitions spark creativity and ignite friendships. It really is a fun time for everyone to see what they can do.

I have no problem with players titling their rooms something to the effect of do not enter. I think their friends should respect that wish and not go in. However, I can also see the lonely aspect of it. Still, those feeling lonely can always play games, go on quests, and meet new VMK friends. :)

I absolutely agree. If someone's room says "Do not enter" or any version thereof, don't enter. That is simple human respect. I hope people understand this was NOT the point of my post.

Just wanted to clarify. :)

I need more clarification. It sounded like you were saying people's feelings
were hurt because they were booted from 'do not enter' rooms. That
doesn't make any sense to me, since we all seem to agree that people
should respect the "do not enter" privacy....so anyone disregarding the
wishes of the room owner and visited anyway were booted due to their
own actions.

Hi Lori,

Not Dreams, but I think I see the point here. It's the threatening, bad-natured tone that is rubbing people the wrong way.

And it is other rooms that are booting without warning. I don't think she is going into the threat rooms. Just getting booted out of others at the same time.

I think this might be a critical mass type of thing.

I'm not doing the competition by choice (can't be there all weekend with those long hours!), so I understand folks wanting to focus and work without chatting. And I understand those who aren't doing this feeling a little left out right now.

Respect certainly runs both ways, and no one is arguing that. It's just hard to remember how it is on the other side of the fence sometimes.

There is a lot of basic respect missing in VMK for some players. Some people who would not barge in on someone in real life will do so because they are hiding behind the little character in VMK.

This behavior extends beyond the ride competition. When I am working on changing my quest or adding prizes, I will get interrupted at least every couple of minutes by people begging to be let in. (I will put a rope accross the entrance and add Closed to the room title.) Sometimes I will have to boot someone because I just can't get it done with the interruptions. At the last resort, I will delete from my friends' list only because they are not treating me as a friend. I ask nicely to be left alone so I can get things done. I do not threaten anyone yet I am the one who called rude and mean. It is times like this that I question what I am doing on VMK.

Enough from me...

Ok, like all things I think respecting someone's privacy request is something that people should follow and adhere to. Whether it is on VMK or anywhere in general. For instance when I am in my hotel room at 10 in the morning with the Privacy Tag hung at the door and I get the "Hello Housekeeping" knock. We have all been there and it is annoying.

Yet when we are talking about VMK and this ride event I find that some do take it a little too seriously. I mean it is just a ride event. I can understand if the seriousness if one of the following occured:

1) You are discussing the recipe of Coke with friends.
2) Talking about spy secrets in relation to the Chinese Military with your friends at the Pentagon.
3) The Colonel swung by your room to tell you how he makes the chicken taste so good.

...the list goes on, however I highly doubt someone spying on your room will make or break your chances in the ride event.

My thoughts are even if someone knows, what will happen? The ride is based on multiple rooms together, not just one. Also if someone sees your idea for a theme odds are they will change their room so that theirs is different. And in the worst case scenario, even if they copy your room what are the chances they will copy all 15+ rooms your ride will have....the odds just don't work. Duplication by coincidence is bound to happen so for people to get uptight I think it is a little presumptious.

All I can say is if people say "please keep out" then respect those wishes. I for one, will probably will do it to prevent distractions while I try building the ride, but could care less otherwise. As they say, copying is the best compliment you could recieve. (Eventhough I think people just say that to be nice and really mean, "Sorry dude, socks to be you!"

Just respect others and the rest should be easy.

I see some people take this too seriously. I let some people (some on teams, some not) see my room because it was just something to do. Then one of them, I walked into a room with no warning, and then yells at me to get out. I am disgusted that people would delete friends off for seeing their room. :sad2: :furious: :sad2: Human greed at its best.

Btw, I do respect the Keep Out. :goodvibes I just send a message asking if it was okay to go in. But some need to realize that some may accidently click the wrong button.

NOTAZOO, I have to politely disagree that it's Ok for someone to come into a room clearly marked "please stay out" and then copy/steal the ideas from the room. Why say it should be OK/allowed/tolerated because it's just VMK? Where is the line drawn?

And like someone said, this is not the cure to cancer. It will not save your life. It is a V I R T U A L P R I Z E! I trust my friends and let them come in. I let someone come to my room, and they sounded shocked. Probably because of the animosity coming from this contest. This is why you put friends only on, and only let your most trusted and mature friends come in.

Does this mean, I condone cheating, not at all! :p :sunny: :p

Also peasy, he said that please respect one's wishes if it say's keep out.

I see that, but to say it's no big deal if someone does it (see above), that is what I disagree with. It's just my opinion, I can't say it's right or wrong, it's just what I believe, kwim?

And yes, it is a virtual prize..that someone poured hours into. Would it be fair if one team spent hours creating a ride that was fantastic, only to have a spy come over and copy a bunch of the rooms and then VMK doesn't choose either team because they don't know who copied who? Or worse, chooses the team that copied altogether? :guilty:

(this is directed at no one in particular - just a general statement) If it says please stay out, then please stay out. And if you are someone who enters these rooms with the purpose to spy, shame on you.

Peasy, I know your response wasn't directed at me and you just used my quote for the sake of arguement, so please don't think I am pointing my response at you.

I just wanted to make it clear that I firmly feel that if it says "Please Stay Out" then by all means stay out and respect the persons request for privacy. My rant wasn't meant to refute that as it is something I strongly believe in, both in and out of VMK.

All I wanted to say was that some people tend to take the game and everything about it way to seriously. The goes for those trying to steal ideas and those trying to set up a virtual "Fort Knox" to protect them.

VMK has provided an opportunity to promote the sharing/collaboration of ideas and events which allow people to challenge one another in order to open up our creative minds and think outside of the box. Not so much to worry about cheating or thinking your idea is the best. Just be creative have fun and not worry about everyone else. Just do your own thing and the rest will follow.

I am sure some will refute this, but that is what opinions are for and these are only my mindless thoughts. :smokin:

Yeah, upon reading your post again, I agree with you on that - freaking out isn't a good way to handle someone coming in either.

I had a few people on my friends list enter my room that had never popped in to say hello before. That was, until I put "under construction please don't enter" on my room - LOL. They also happen to be on another team. I wasn't happy about it, but I'm not going to wig out about it. It is a game after all, I have enough stress in real life :thumbsup2
