Ride chicken help - what should I try next?

I've always come to my friends here at the DIS for advice about rides. I don't like roller coasters, but I like to try at least one or two other rides because my family wants me to join them (they're all kamakazi's).

Last trip I tried Test Track and HATED it. I've tried Dinosaur and liked that, although I screamed my head off. I also loved Kali River Rapids, and Pirates is about as much "dip" as I can pull off.

I was thinking about Star Tours for our next trip. Do you think I could do it if I took some Bonine with my breakfast?

I plan to do Soarin' - rides like that I love - as long as it's not fast. Heights don't bother me, but dropping does. Any drops on Soarin'?

I'm so sorry you didn't like Test Track! I have not done Soarin yet, but as far as Star Tours goes, it's a little jerky. There are no dips or plunges, but if you can take the Dinosaur Ride (which is REALLY jerky) then you should like Star Tours.

I'm a ride chicken too. Why did you hate Test Track? I was going to try it this time.
Have you done Splash Mountain? It is my favorite, but I'm very nervous waiting for the final drop.
Star Tours is a little wacky, not nearly as bad as Body Wars. Motion sickness med would definitely help. I like ST.

I am a wimp, too. I can barely take the Pirates' drop. Have you tried Maelstrom in Norway? The drop is not much worse than Pirates (thought I won't go on it anymore). I don't like TT anymore either because it takes my breath away when we go around the building--even though it's only going 60 mph!--though I have done it several times in the past. The Barnstormer and Thunder Railroad are two that I have gone on serveral times (but I won't do them anymore) and the drops aren't very bad and they are pretty fun! I have NEVER liked roller coasters, but they made me laugh. I have never done any of the motion ones (Dinosaur, Star Tours, etc.), but I really hope to try Soarin' too, so I hope it's not too bad. I even have to close my eyes during UoE when Bill Nye is showing Ellen around--the photography of flying makes me ill. I can't even do the 360 movies in the countries!

Hi Harambe--

Let me give some long term encouragement/advice. I too used to be a ride chicken. Very embarrassing a few years ago when I couldn't even ride Splash Mountain with my sibs and nephews and nieces.

A couple of years ago, I decided to take the plunge... just to see if I could "get over it." So I rode Splash Mountain... wasn't too bad. I got on Big Thunder Mountain... did just fine. Wasn't crazy about Space Mountain (I like to see where I'm going), but I made it.

To make a long story short, last year I rode Tower of Terror, and the Rockin' Roller Coaster at MGM. I wouldn't call myself a hard core thrill seeker... in fact I still won't ride Kracken at Sea World... but I've come a long long way. Now, my nine year old DD LOVES to ride the coasters with her Dad.

The point is, you might surprise yourself if you decide to face your fears. Anyway, Good Luck!

I am a roller coaster chicken also!! But I had to be brave for my kids and act like the smaller roller coasters weren't all that bad. I lucked out on the Rockin' Roller Coaster cause my 2 younger kids were just a tad too short for it and so I was so extremely lucky that I had to wait w/them and let my older daughter and husband ride it w/o us!!! But this year I'm gonna try it cause I don't know when we'll be able to convince DH to take us again. I keep my eyes shut the entire time and try to act like I'm not on the ride and just move w/the ride and before I know it, it's over.

You will like Soarin'. I hate drops too but Soarin has none and its just a smooth relaxing ride (basing this on the CA version). I don't like roller caosters but the Disney rides I can usually handle fine. Stars Tours is not to bad. There is one portion where you feel like you are dropping, but I can handle that knowing its simulator and I am not actually plummetting to my death, lol. TOT on the other hand... . DD (4) is a major thrill seeker and this is her first year being tall enough (hopefully, she will be so crushed if she can't get on) for TOT and Splash, etc. I will go on Splash with her (if you haven't tried it, its really fun and the drop while longer is actually no worse then pirates because the bad part about the drop is really just the psyching yourself up for it), but dh is handling TOT with her. Thunder Mountain is really fun too because there aren't really any straight drops, they curve around alot, and I can handle the speed and turns just not the straight drops.

I'm a total roller-coaster chicken too.....actually only if they are outdoor roller costers like the ones at Six Flags. I can do the indoor ones at WDW like Space Mountain, R&R, Big Thunder but not any at Six Flags. I HATE looking down and seeing little cars and little people!! That is freaky!! Giant drops like Dr. Doom at Universal.....no way!! I terrified of Tower of Terror too.....once was enough for me!!

Thanks for all the great advice! DS is a major Star Wars fan, and would just love it if I could go on it with him.

NO WAY will I do Splash. DH wants me in that picture, but I know I'd just jump out, right in the water, to avoid that plunge.

MickeyMom - I did do Maelstorm and liked it. That plunged reminded me of Kali. I just can't believe how long you have to wait to ride the Norway ride!

DisneyDotty - I didn't like the stops and starts of Test Track, and since I shut my eyes for the fast around the building part, I was jerked from side to side. But I did get in the family picture! You will probably do okay if you keep the eyes open!

DisCom4 - you are right about facing the fears. One of the biggest problems I have at WDW is the long pre-shows. If I could just jump on a ride when I have my nerve, I'd be okay. But they make you go into rooms to see films, or make you walk a ways into the ride, etc. and I panic and chicken out.
