Have you ever put something on the bottom of your grocery cart and forgot about it?? Well, don't do it in Rhinebeck NY!!
My friend was just arrested because she had put some magazines on the bottom of her cart and forgot they were there and the store stopped her and took her inside ( in front of her two young kids ) and arrested her!!! She didn't remember they were on the cart till they stopped her and when she tried to explain and pay, they refused!! Holy Cow!! Don't they have something better to do with taxpayer $ then arrest housewives that forgot something!!
I could see if she loaded them in her car and drove away, but she hadn't even made it to her car!!

Technically, as soon as you walk out the door with them, it's considered "stealing". But, I agree, something like a magazine is so not-arrestable (i know not a real word), especially someone with kids. I could understand if it was I giant bottle of liquor or something. I think they really need to take those things on a case by case basis.

I agree that walking out the door is stealing, but I have gotten to the car and noticed that I had water bottles on the bottom and went back inside to pay for them...sometimes you don't remember till you are unloading the cart

It's ridiculous. No doubt 30 other people got away with stolen merchandise on purpose that day.

My friend got all the way home one day with a bottle of asprin in her bag from Target that she realized wasn't on her receipt.........she drove all the way back & took it in to pay for it & told the Target employee that she had gotten it home without paying for it & came back & now wanted to pay for it & the employee looked at her & said "Why?"

Reminds me of something. Once I found a 50 dollar bill in the middle of the street (right by the police station). I felt I should try and turn it in (otherwise I'd be racked with guilt). I brought it into the police station and the cop looked at me the same way - then he said "Keep it. It's your lucky day". ;)

My favorite thing is the "elderly" people down here who think nothing of getting food off the shelves and eating it while they shop, then putting the wrapper/carton back on the shelf somewhere...another trick they use is getting coke from the deli and leaving the empty cup stashed on the shelf...when I commented on this to a lady once she looked like she would deck me and told me "Cokes are FREE!!!"...yeah..that is why they have a UPC code on the cup and you are leaving it on a shelf!!

Interesting... I work in a store, and how we counteract shoplifting is very different.

Basically, we give the customer many chances to put back the merchandise (I think its three times) before management is called.

Technically, management is not to call the cops unless the management itself witnesses the theft, witnesses the employees speaking all three times to the alleged thief, and then goes from there.

I'm not saying we have an open invitation to stealing, but the store has many alleged shoplifters returning merchandise to another part of the store, instead of product actually leaving the store stolen.

I can't stand the lazy guys at WalMart. I buy softner salt there and have to drive to the garden center to pick it up. The cashier will say "Joe Schmoe" is outside today and will load it for you. Then when you get out there good ole Joe is busy talking to another employee but as soon as you get your salt loaded and get back in your vehicle he's there banging on your window demanding to see your receipt. Last time I just said thanks for the help and pulled away. Let them call the cops. :p I'm not getting paid to do his job so why should I help him make it look like he's done it.
