RFID....in the mugs?

Maybe this should go to the rumors board I'm not sure, but someone here may know if this is real or fiction.

I have heard that in order to discourage guests from abusing the mug/drink system at the resorts that Disney is going to start putting RFID chips into the mugs.

With the new RFID enabled mugs you will only be able to get refills at your resort for the length of your stay and the machines will be timed to prevent you from filling up more than once in a specified period of time to prevent people from filling other containers with the drinks from the resorts.

Some might say it's far fetched and I didn't think that drink abuse was rampant, but I could certain see it happening as people try to save money however they can. With the mugs running $15 each or being included in a dining plan and not changing designs from year to year there isn't anything that prevents guests from returning with a mug from a previous trip. There's also nothing that prevents people from filling other containers, either directly or by repeatedly filling the mugs. Again, not something I would've thought of but it is allegedly a problem.

With Disney already embracing RFID for tickets, room keys, MagicBands, etc I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.

This should probably be in the Official Refillable Mugs stickey, but since you asked. They already tested this a couple years ago and decided against implementing it.

Disney was experimenting with the cup chip back in 2011 and I have not heard much after that. Also; it's not just the mugs that will have the chip, every drink cup is suppose too. The mugs would be good for 2 weeks and the single serving cups would be good for 1 hour and only 4 refills, and you would not be able to refill it until 5 minutes after you filled it.

Ditto that. While it's a nice idea, I think having to deal with RFID chips in a mug or a cup would be difficult. Especially if you have a youngster who want to get his/her own drink.

"No, Jimmy, you have to hold the mug this way first so the drink will come out"

I'm all for RFID technology since I work for a company that is a pioneer in it but for some things, it's just not worth it.

I was at All-Star Sports during the test period.:)

The coolest part was that Tinker Bell "filled" your mug.:)

At TL 2weeks ago, our refillable water park-only mugs had a bar code on them that activated the drink machine. It didn't seem to have a lock out time, so you could refill right away (like when some one's mug wouldn't scan, which happened often).

as mentioned, it's been tested, but don't think anything came of it

i don't think it's rampant either. There is nothing to prevent people (except shame) from filling with other containers, and occas. I've seen this, but not that often

It will be interesting o see what happens with the RFID technology. I've already heard they are having problems with no gates/turnstiles at park entrances with people pushing thru without scanning their RFID kttw card, and not waiting their turn.
Some people's behaviour is just deplorable. :sad1:

Some people do get a bit nuts at times. I've seen people pushing and shoving for the trams in the MK parking lot before.

Not to get too off topic but don't the RFID entryways have a turnstile that won't turn unless a card gets scanned?

No. Two people actually go though the same area at a time. You both hold your card on the scanner and put your finger on the pad and when the light turns green you are allowed through. There is no turnstile. Those are only a the regular paper ticket entrance.

They were doing away with the turnstiles, as mentioned. But I read rumours because of the problems of people ( and I use the term loosely) pushing thru, putting CMs in a bad position of trying to play security guard too, they may be bringing them back.
Rumour has it!

The new turnstiles do seem to be a bit, um..challenging shall we say for some. We were there last month and I made the comment that it would be really easy for someone to walk thru without a ticket now. Instead of the scanning "poles" being in a straight line across the entrance like the turnstiles were, they are grouped in twos with one in front of the other. When you add extra stuff like strollers, wheelchairs, ECV's ect in the mix with people who couldn't insert their ticket into the old turnstiles the new system can be a challenge. It seems like if they had the new RFID poles set up like the turnstiles were, it would be easier for guests and CM's alike.

i converted my PAP to an RFID and it worked great. There is no issue that i saw with not having a turnstyle. It actually made it easier with a stroller and ECV.

I remember being at Sports when they tested this, too. But don't remember Tinker Bell. What was that about? Just curious....

:)

It may happen, but it seems like it would cause more issues then be a benefit. I'm sure there is some Mug abuse, but I don't think it is as big a deal as it get made out to be on these boards (in regard to the number of people doing it)...most don't go enough or think about using the same mug and a large number of people do the meal plan which gives them mugs.

Yes. The WPs have had the bar code system in place for some time. AFAIK it's never been used elsewhere, however.

The AS Sports RFID test worked differently and also has never been used elsewhere to this point.

I had one trying to convince me that I hadn't scanned my pass, when in fact I had. She just didn't see me do it. Of course it wouldn't scan when she made me do it again (because it had already been scanned), and I had to show ID. They need to either watch more closely or keep the guests in line until they're told to step up and do the scan.

When Guests would put their mug under the dispenser, there was the sound that happens when Tinker Bell sprinkles Pixie Dust and then the machine would dispense the drink.:)
