Rewards miles from work.... wwyd?

I work for a very small business and the owner is exactly like this. He wouldn't think a thing of asking you to do something like this too. He feels that he owns everything related to the business and if you try to say otherwise he accuses you of stealing from him or wasting his money. The only way to work here is to keep your mouth shut. In small businesses the owner rules. There are not many employee rights.

This is a common mind set of small business owners. I know a lot of them. They are not employees so can't really empathize with their employees. None of the rules apply to them. And they deserve everything, since they were so much smarter than everyone because they started a successful small business. In fact I heard a group of them joking that if taxes are raised on small business owners it won't really affect them, they'll just cut their employees pay. It's the old adage "He who has the gold makes the rules."

wow that would suck to feel like you have to do this! Many of my friends came from being co-workers....some of us even vacation together! We go to bbq's at each others homes in the summers etc.....can't imagine not socializing out of work with coworkers! We go to wakes for each others relatives, weddings of coworkers etc!

you can think what you want but it is STILL good advice. If you want people to stay out of your personal business, keep it personal. I worked in the same office for 23 years and I COULD tell you lots of stuff lots of those people wish was forgotten....but it's not forgotten and sooner or later every new employee learns the dirt. And, as seen by the OP's story, it CAN come back to bite you.

I, too, have friends among my co-workers that I would and do socialize with...however, you must exercise discretion in whom you share your 'outside' life with. You can count the people that you can tell a secret to that will KEEP it a secret on one hand.

I would recommend quietly keeping a record of this - with dates. Just in case anything negative comes out of it later down the road.

Of course you could neglect to add your FF account number to any future business travel reservations (that way there would be no miles/points to transfer)- but it could affect your "BIS" status.

Just a thought....

Unfortunately, this is true. As someone who used to own a small business, I thought it was always in our best interest to treat our employees well to build loyalty. Owners like the ones you describe above will get sabotaged by their employees every chance they get. I've seen it all too many times as an employee. In my current, extremely crappy job, you should see the things drivers do. . .drive all day with their parking brakes on, continuously drive around a parking lot to burn gas while they are on stand-by, actually run water from the hose in the wash bay up into the tail pipe. Owners like that, besides just being jack*sses are also penny wise, but pound foolish. I hope the OP already has a passive aggressive plan. :thumbsup2

so the saga continues.. I gave him the miles, then today he "joked" with me about me being the only one who questioned him about it.. he said " I asked you and 2 others, both other girls said sure no problems but you gave me the Jean tude" har har.

Sigh... working for a small company has its ups and downs.. its very informal , I have a lot of freedom, and a lot of perks... but stuff like this gets me so annoyed !

As i think i stated in an earlier post, I'm the only one that doesn't just blindly follow what the man says to do, for every no that i give him he gets 10 yes's!

lots of really inappropriate things go down!

If your employer is only requiring SOME employees to turn over their miles to him, and he's asking only women employees to turn over their miles, then he IS doing something illegal. That conduct is sex discrimination. Your employer has changed the terms and conditions of employment for women employees only. The company may be small enough to avoid coverage under federal EEOC laws, but many state laws cover smaller employers.
