Cast: Me(30) and DH(31). DH has a chronic pain condition and uses a power wheelchair so I have included information about accessibility for those that are interested in such things. He can walk a few feet and transfer to a regular chair. However, he prefers to stay in his PC and this requires a table that he can drive straight into his "seat" because it is hard to maneuver the chair around in between crowded tables. We always explain this when entering a restaurant and I always state that we are willing to wait longer for a suitable table. We stayed on the concierge floor at AKL, so we did not eat breakfast out and supplemented meals with snacks from the lounge.
Sunday (arrival): It was cold and drizzling when we arrived at noon. Luckily we had planned ahead for an early afternoon meal. We had Afternoon Tea at the Grand Floridian. Ordered the Tea for Two and added on one order of strawberries and cream. DH had black currant tea while I had lemon verbena. Both were excellent. The sandwiches were wonderful egg salad, chicken salad, roasted pear, salmon pate and cucumber with watercress. This was followed a raspberry jam tart and a warm scone with double cream. Double cream is sweeter and lighter than butter. We each got to choose two pastries from the 3-tiered serving tray. DH had a swan filled with chantilly cream and chocolate mousse. I had an éclair and a chocolate covered strawberry. These were followed by our strawberries and whipped cream. One serving was more than plenty for the both of us! Every strawberry was perfectly ripe. This was a wonderful way to start our vacation. Service: Our food was served promptly and our waiter told us about our food. He did not spend any time chatting with us, which was okay because we were busy taking in the sites of the lobby. Accessibility: The tables are very small and DH could not comfortably sit at one in his PC. He left the PC on the ramp into the lounge and used a regular chair.
Monday (Epcot day): We had priority seatings for lunch at Marrakesh. Only six tables were seated so we could have skipped making the priority seatings. We had the jasmina salad, which consisted of field greens topped with roasted vegetables (squash, egglplant, carrots, etc.) and a light vinaigrette dressing. We shared the shaman platter. The couscous was light and fluffy. The beef roll and chicken pastry were hot and crispy. Everything was tasty and we left very full. For anyone considering this restaurant, I highly recommend it. The food has flavor from the spices, but is not hot spicy. Service: Very good. Our waiter was attentive and explained the different foods to us. He answered questions about Morocco dining as well. Accessibility: DH comfortably sat at the table in his PC. I did note that as at most WDW restaurants, the tables were close together. If the restaurant had been busy we would have needed a table with straight on access for him to easily maneuver to the table.
We stopped for a snack at Tempura Kiku in Japan. DH had eel sushi that he described as perfect and we shared the chicken and shrimp tempura. It was cooked right in front of us and served piping hot. The batter was very light and crispy. Accessibility: We were offered seats at the front of the bar (it is set up like a sushi bar) but DH's chair would have been blocking other people in. So he opted to park his chair in the lobby and walk to his seat.
Dinner was at Jiko at our hotel, AKL. We shared the cinnamon beef roll appetizer and the mixed green salad with carrot buttermilk dressing. DH had the filet with mac and cheese and I had the curried shrimp. Warning: the beef is cooked rarer than most places. DH ordered medium well and it was almost raw in the middle. Our waitress happily took both of our plates back and my shrimp were kept warm until DH's steak was cooked more. The food was replated and this time his steak was cooked perfectly. The mac and cheese was quite good and the spaghetti squash cake that came with my shrimp was fantastic. We shared the dreamsicle dessert which was good, but a little unusual. The mango sorbet was very good, but the raspberry sorbet was a little strong for me. Service: Definitely a 10. Our server could not have been better. She made recommendations and clearly knew the menu. We do not drink alcohol, but I heard her help several other guests choose wines and meals. The restaurant only serves African wines, so this skill was appreciated by those guests. Everything was so good that we returned on Valentine's day. Accessibility: There was a place to park the PC and DH walked to the table because the restaurant was very full. He would have had difficulty maneuvering his chair to our table in the back. But we could have waited for a table closer to the entrance if he had not been able to walk.
