Hi -
We just returned from our first ever trip to DL. It was FANTASTIC and we can't wait to go again.

I wanted to give a quick review of the FFI, since I had a hard time finding much info on it - and of the Mickey & Friends breakfast buffet at the PCH Grill.

FFI: We got an $89/night deal. That, and the fact that they would guarantee adjoining rooms, made us go with FFI. I can't compare it to other good neighbor hotels since it's the only one I've visited, but I can say that while the decor was unimpressive really - it was clean and convenient. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the bed was comfortable, the shower was nice, and it seemed to me to be very close to the parks. I don't know if we'd stay again (we stopped at the Grand Californian for a peek and I think my husband and I were both smitten), but I'm not disappointed with the FFI.

We chose to do 2 character dining experiences while there - Ariel's Grotto for my daughter and Mickey & Friend's for my 7 year old who is a Stitch fanatic. Ariel's Grotto was fantastic. We ate there for lunch, the food was delicious, and the character interaction was great. Cinderella, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Belle were there - each princess stopping at every single table of the packed restaurant for autographs and pictures. The waitstaff was so organized - the entire lunch was so well-run it was truly impressive. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. That and the BBB were the absolute highlights of my daughter's trip. (By the way, at the BBB, if you don't want to buy a $65 princess gown - I highly suggest bringing one. Or do like I did, convince your daughter to buy one of the princess nightgowns - they were fancy enough for her to feel princess-y, she wore it outside like a dress - and we can use it again - all for about $30.)

The other character dining experience - the breakfast buffet at PCH Grill with Mickey & Friends was a HUGE disappointment. If I hadn't pre-paid for it, I would've walked out. The vibe was not what I'd come to expect from Disney. It was unenthusiastic to say the least. I felt like I was eating at the Denny's down the street. The servers were scarce - I had to chase someone down with the creamer pitcher in my hand to get cream for my coffee and by the time I found someone to get it, my coffee was cold - but there was no one to replace it for me and we didn't get a refill offered until we were being handed the check just about.

But what REALLY killed the experience was the food. We changed our reservations from 9 to 11 a.m. and I'm sure that had a lot to do with the quality of the food - though paying over $100 for 4 people to eat I think I had a right to expect more.

The food was gross. The Mickey waffles were completely hard. The pancakes were hard around the edges and kind of soggy inside. The oatmeal had a film on top of it. The eggs looked congealed. The bacon - I tried to pick up a piece and just about the entire bowl of bacon lifted up en masse. My husband and I each tried an omelet (they were made in front of you and appeared to be the only "fresh" thing being offered). My kids had some fruit. My daughter tried to eat a mini-bagel but it was so stale she couldn't bite through it (and ended up flinging jelly everywhere when she tried to rip a piece off with her teeth - it was that stale.) The best thing I had to eat was the handful of dry apple jacks I took from the cold cereal dispenser on the way out.

I realize that it's usually not a good idea to eat from a buffet so long after opening, but like I said above, paying that much money I feel justified in fully expecting to get a decent meal.

If you want to give the buffet a try, I highly suggest making your reservations close to opening. Maybe it's better then.

I'm sorry your experience at Mickey & Friends wasn't a good one. Next time I would suggest trying out Goofy's kitchen in the Disneyland hotel. I ate there yesterday and it was great! :thumbsup2

It doesn't have stitch but we did see Goofy, Baloo, Mulan, Chip & Dale and Cinderella.

Next time, definitely. If it hadn't been for the fact that the Mickey and Friends buffet is the only place to (reliably) catch Stitch, we would've chosen Goofy's.

I'm glad you had a great time for the most part ~ sorry about Mickey & Friends. A word of advice for the Grand ~ sure the lobby is lovely and anyone can do as you did, check it out, sit down and relax but IMO the rooms aren't anything special and way too much $$ ~ I actually prefer the rooms in the PP & DLH but I'd still rather stay off site, I haven't stayed at the FFI though. I quoted the above to share with you and others this ~ I buy the same dresses/costumes that are sold in the parks on ebay for about $30! http://shop.ebay.com/wantsnneeds4u/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 ~ if she doesn't have what you're looking for contact her, she'll list it and you just need to "grab" it before someone else does. DD has the Alice, Jasmine, Tink, the now discontinued white princess dress and Tiana dresses.

Thanks for the review on the Mickey breakfast. I was considering this and haven't heard anything about it since it opened. We loved the Lilo & Stitch Breakfast, and I kind of assumed DL was just changing theming but food quality would stay the same.

A large group of the Disboard Divas ate at the Mickey & Friends "Surf's Up" breakfast yesterday and my experience was quite different--however we were seated at 9:30 a.m.

There were some faves missing--the pineapple scones and the salmon were MIA. They seemed to replace the salmon with chicken (and still have rice).

The egg dishes all looked freshly made and the hash browns were great. The peanut better and chocolate french toast bread pudding sounds gross but was actually very good! They also had three kinds of flatbread that were excellent (especially the salmon--can you tell I like salmon?)

The bacon was crisp and good and the pork sausage was good. The chicken sausage was I thought bland.

They had a couple of new items--chilaliques (I think that's how it's spelled) which were pretty good and my Mickey waffle and pancake was fresh and delicious. And the strawberries were YUM.

And of course we got to see Stitch, Mickey, Pluto, Daisy and Minnie!

I am sorry to hear things were so amiss at Surf's Up with Mickey and Friends. I would be willing to bet that they were having one of those dreaded, infamous "off days" in service and food quality that all the character meals and all the restaurants at DLR suffer through here and there. It seems like there have been one or two other people who have eaten at that breakfast since December when it became Mickey and Friends, and they reported that they enjoyed it a great deal.

(In fact, Aussietravellers - are you out there?) If I recall, Aussietravellers ate at Surf's Up with Mickey more than once and had a great time!

I will concur with Disney-inspired that Goofy's has a great buffet - both in variety and quality. The last time I ate there, the buffet was even better than my previous times there. But Goofy's can have "off days" too, in service and in food. They usually do a pretty good job of keeping the buffet fresh, but things can change on a dime depending on who is working that day! There may be days when the eggs are not as fresh or the bacon is too hard or whatever. I know that my last meal at Storytellers Critter Breakfast was not good ("off day"!), but the food has been better on other occasions when I ate there.

I also agree with DisneyMomma81 about the GCH - anyone can enjoy the great lobby and hearth area and those wonderful comfy chairs, but the actual rooms (at least the two rooms that I had) were nothing too spectacular. They were nice, but not very spacious and they were rather dark. I, too, prefer the rooms at PPH by a mile, and even though it has been a long time since I stayed at DLH, I think I prefer those rooms too.

Thanks for the review...I was thinking of trying the Mickey Buffet on my upcoming trip to the Park, but I think I'll stick with (my favorite ), Goofy's Kitchen. It's disappointing to hear that they got rid of the salmon and the pineapple scones, 2 unique & yummy things that the Lilo & Stitch breakfast used to have. Seconding what Sherry E said, next time, if you want to do a Character meal, go with Goofy's Kitchen...I've never had a bad experience there, and have been going there since I was around 12 years old (aka, a million years ago, when it was in the old location). I've read a couple bad reviews of the place, but what seems like 99.999% of the time, GK gets good reviews.

ooh my gosh i was waiting for someone to say it.. NOT the SALMON!!! first they take Yamabuki away now they take away my salmon.. GEEZ.. okay my vent is over. I'm almost afraid to have a favorite place these days.

The salmon was one of the best parts, in my opinion, as well.

Sherry, when are you planning on another Disney trip? Maybe this year?

It's been awhile since we've gone, but we are definitely going this yr! I am filing our taxes tonight, and we are getting back over double the amount I was expecting. This will cover about 80 percent of our trip expenses, so I am super excited.

We have always seen Stitch at Goofy's. My son's favorite character too.
