Returning gift at Walmart paid for with check?

My sweet father in law gave me a necklace from Walmart for Christmas - unfortunately it is nothing I would or could ever wear (both a matter of style preferance and metal "allergy" problem that makes my neck break out in a rash when I wear a metal necklace). He included the gift receipt in case I wanted to return it. I do, but don't want to tell him b/c I'm afraid it will hurt his feelings, so I want to do it on my own and on the sly.

The problem is that he paid for the necklace by check and just 2 days ago. How does Walmart handle returns for items paid for by checks? I know it used to be that they wouldn't give you your money back until the original check had "cleared" (about 2 weeks usually) but the receipt says something about them doing an automatic electronic fund transfer when you give them a check. Does this mean I can return it immediately for credit/cash or do I have to wait?

Also, does anyone know what Walmart offers when you return with a receipt on a check paid item? Is it cash or credit?

The last time I did a return at Walmart (last month) I had paid with a check and they just gave me cash back and it was the same day. If it's a larger amount of money I have had them issue a gift card for the amount.

Our local Wal Mart will not refund for an item paid for by check until 10 days after the original purchase. They will let you do an even exchange or give a Wal Mart gift card for the purchase price.

I returned merchandise to Walmart that DH paid for with his Mastercard. The cashier could have credited his account, but I requested a gift card instead (I had receipts for everything I was returning).

Could you return it without the receipt? Then they wouldn't know when it was bought and you wouldn't have to worry about the check. You can just get a store credit then.

Thanks everyone for the answers! I went to Walmart this morning to return the item. The ttl was for $214 and they did give me cash back. I guess the EFT did change the policy of having to wait for the check to clear.
