Some friends and I are renting a car from Alamo at our airport next week, leaving our cars in airport parking while we drive the rental car to our destination. I am driving, so the car and credit card will be in my name. When we return, we'd like to have my friend drop me off at my car in the parking lot and then she would return the car to Alamo and take their shuttle to the airport terminal as she will be flying home.

My question is whether my friend will have trouble returning the rental car without me present? Assuming there is no damage. Thanks!

Well, technically your friend will not be an authorized driver unless you add her to your reservation.

Short of an accident happening between dropping you off and returning the car, there will be no issue.

Maybe you could both drop off the car at the Alamo Rental Car Return, and you could take the shuttle back to the Airport Parking?

I thought of that but the shuttle goes between terminals. Just wanted to confirm whether my card or ID is needed at drop-off, or if all the "paperwork" is done at pick-up. Thanks!

i have never been asked for ID when dropping off an Alamo rental. Routinely get asked: How was the car? Do you want to leave the charges on the credit card used to secure the reservation?

If your friend is not listed on the rental and there is an accident, whatever insurance product covering that rental will likely be invalidated. If that happens, you'll be financially liable for everything.

Different people will have different risk tolerance. But, that's not a risk I'd take on.

I understand that and also get that anything can happen at any time, but she will be driving 2 minutes on airport property less than one mile. The alternative is paying an extra $75 for her to do that. If God forbid something happens to the car during that time, we were doomed from the start

When we dropped off the car in Feb. they (at MCO) didn't ask for anything. She'll be fine.

Hence, the statement I made about risk tolerance.

But, don't understate that risk. You're potentially talking about the full replacement cost of the vehicle, lost rental income, the cost of all other vehicles involved (if at fault), and medical costs of anyone injured.

I understand. But to get back on topic, just was wondering what the protocol is on the return and I got my answer. Thanks all!

She can't drop the car off if she isn't a listed driver on the rental.

If she is a listed driver on the rental, there shouldn't be a problem with her dropping it off. At least at MCO, you pay at the time of pick up, and they just look over the car at the return.

Every time I drop off a car, they scan the bar code, check the gas, hand me the receipt. They don't ask who I am.
yes, exactly true. I mentioned the part of "can't drop off if not a listed driver" because in terms of liability, a person who isn't listed as an authorized driver on the rental agreement is not legally supposed to be driving the car. If someone not on the agreement drives the car (even just in a parking lot or something that seems innocent enough) and has an accident, there will be problems to deal with. Personally, that's a risk I'm not willing to take.

Yes, that was discussed in the above posts. Another driver is not supposed to drop off the car, but that doesn't mean she can't. The OP seems to be willing to take that risk.
