Returning a gift to another store?

My DH and my mom both gave me a copy of the same book for Christmas. DH bought it from Amazon. I don't know exactly where my mom bought it, but I'm thinking either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It would be easier to return one to B&N rather than dealing with a return by mail.

Does anyone know if Barnes and Noble will take it without a receipt and if there's a possibility it wasn't even purchased there? It's a common enough book and I know they carry it. I wouldn't mind getting a store credit instead of a refund. I just don't need two copies of the book. Thanks!

I'm not sure. Everything I am seeing on their website is talking about having to have a receipt. I'll post back if I find anything else.

B&N will not take anything back without a receipt. DD tried to return so giftd last year that still had the tags but no receipt. They refused so she gave them to Goodwill.

In my experience, if WalMart sells an item, they will return it without a receipt. I use this for items I receive from far away relatives that I can't ask for a receipt. I was able to return a DVD to WalMart without a receipt and received a gift card for approx $10. I later found out from the family member that they ordered it from Amazon Black Friday for $2 I plan on doing this with another item this Christmas because the item was purchased from a store that is not in my area (out of state chain). I might not get the same value that was paid for the item, but I get something out of it.

Amazon is super easy to return with. All you need is the order number from the person who purchased it and Amazon will pay for shipping and even send you a box if you need it.

Books are in generally very difficult to return. Walmart may return it. Whats to stop someone from reading a book and then returning it? Other than a conscience?

Have you tried searching the isbn number to see where it might have been purchased?

My mom just told me she also bought it from Amazon. I will figure out how to return the duplicate copy to them. I doubt if Walmart would carry it (it's a reference book about Asperger's Syndrome), but major bookstores would. Thanks for the help everyone!

I just returned a dvd to amazon that i bought for my brother but then it went on sale at best buy for $25 cheaper. They said i had to pay to ship it back bc im not returning it bc of something they did, which is fine and makes sense. They sent me two of something that i ordered for my mom so im gonna see if i can return them both in the same box since the 2nd thing was thier error.

Im just saying so OP knows they might have to pay to ship it back

My dd got 2 gifts from my MIL - a zhu zhu pet hamster and a Barbie, and she's too old for both. (She's almost 12.) Not wanting to hurt MIL's feelings, we didn't want to ask where she got it. I decided to just try returning it to Target first, told them I wasn't sure she even got them there. But they took them back and gave my dd a GC for the lowest price like within the last 30 days or something like that. If it didn't work at Target, my next stop would've been Wal-Mart.

I was in Walmart on Sunday and a woman was trying to return a book. They wouldn't take it back and something about 24 hours for books.

Books are returnable, but usually have very short return times. I think B&N is 2 weeks. I know Borders is 14 days as well, but has extended return for the holidays until mid January.

I just saw on the TV news that several companies are lifting the return rules for this week only. Call and see if Barnes and Noble have done this. Good Luck

DS got a DVD that he had absolutely NO interest in. No gift receipt. I took it to Best Buy and asked if he could have store credit for it. They were very nice and gave him a gift card for $24.99 + Tax.

OP back.

I found out from my DH that he ended up getting me two duplicate books from my Amazon list. My sister told him no one in my family was buying them so he bought them and was saving one for my birthday (which is Thursday). Turned out my mom bought them too (and was saving one for my birthday...I'll have to act surprised!). We punched in the order number last night and found out it would cost $4.98 to ship them back. One of the books only cost $5.60 and he already paid $4.98 to have them shipped here. We decided to donate them to my DS's school. They're both about Asperger's Syndrome and he attends a special Asperger's program. Problem solved and the school will be happy! If they already have them in their library, perhaps they can give them to a new family that is still learning about the disorder.

I read an article where the stores were going to stop taking back merchandise that were not purchased at their store. Taking something back to a retailer where it was not purchased is stealing in my opinion.. This is not the article, but it does contain the return policies for anyone who may need it

Its not stealing - the store chooses to take items back without returns and can then sell it. I have even told Walmart I had no idea where the item came from. You are basically choosing to sell your item back to them. I think it makes good business sense to do it - if I have something with no receipt - then I take it back to Walmart - they give me a credit - I spend it in their store and usually end up spending more than the amount and they can sell the item to someone else.
