I have just made reservations for our second stay at WL in 9/04; on my reservation confirmation, it states "returning guest." Does that mean anything? I.e. I'm hoping that I might get some sort of preference in room assignment.

Sorry, it only means that they have a record of your previous stay in their reservation system. The only real perk may be that you may get a postcard in the mail with a special offer to come again down the road.
