Rethinking Boma's.

We're staying at AKL. I have dinner reservations for the day we visit the MK. I thought that day we would stay at MK as long as they wanted, then head back to the hotel for dinner.

However, I don't really like trying strange foods and I know my kids won't. From picture, I think the restaurant looks really cool, but I'm rethinking going there for dinner.

Any other suggestions? We're doing Crystal Palace for breakfast, counter service for lunch. I was thinking about going back to the hotel, rest...but ds (11) said NO WAY (go back to the hotel, what for?).

So, not sure what to do for dinner. I don't have any PS at any other resorts, just parks. Should we go back to our hotel, rest and refresh, then go to a another resort for dinner?

Any suggestions are welcome.

To be honest I didn't think I would like the food but after a long rainy day in the parks we just wanted to be back at the hotel for dinner. We all really liked Boma. I have a very picky dd and she ate the peanut butter & jelly sandwhiches. She also tried some of the meats. She wouldn't eat any of the veggies (at least that she knew of ;) ) but according to her the Fufu was good(mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon and other sweet spices). We just filled our plates and sampled each others' plates. There was a lot there that I liked and nothing bothered my tummy if you know what I mean;). Lots of the flavors are sweet, cinnamon, curry, nutmeg, etc.

Here's an idea, if the reason you want to try Boma is for the atmosphere, do it for breakfast. They do have some exotic breakfast items but according to the menu on allearsnet.com they have normal breakfast stuff like, pastries, fresh fruit, omlets, cereal, waffles, pancakes, bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, Breakfast Pizza. Here you can check the menu out yourself http://allearsnet.com/menu/menu_boma.htm
Then you can do Crystal Palace for Dinner. If your set on CP for breakfast then for dinner you could go to the Whispering Canyon Cafe at the Wilderness Lodge. I've never been there either but I've heard tons of great stuff about it. They got all-you-can-eat skillets and a regular menu: http://allearsnet.com/menu/menu_wc.htm
If you do want to stay in the MK for dinner then my choice would be Cinderella's Royal Table.
What month are you going in? If it's hot your son my want to go back to the resort to swim, even though he doesn't think he would want to leave. :bounce:

Here's our experience...dh who loves 'different' types of food, me a real meat and potatoes gal and dd, 11, who would live on hot dogs/mac and cheese/ or peanut butter. Dh wanted to try Boma so we did in Nov. We ALL loved it. There was more than enough of the 'different' food for my dh and I found a lot of stuff to eat that I thought I wouldn't like...loved it. Even dd had plenty to eat. This is one of the few spots that everyone has asked to go back to.

It may sound way over the top but it really isn't. And there was prime rib there for those who aren't crazy about taking any chances. But, while I did have the prime rib, I had a lot of other things and they were delicious...I would sell my dh for some of the butternut squash soup right now, and I'm not really a soup lover. And dd had a whole kid's station with the regular Disney offerings for kids. So, she was happy and even tried a few new things.
I would keep the PS. You may be surprised!!

My father, a real meat and potatoes man, found plenty of "normal" foods to keep him happy and he loved the desserts (I think he sampled at least FIVE!). My DD finds similar foods and occasionally tries something different, often with no prompting from me. It's kind of a low pressure situation--lots of "old" foods and LOTS of new and different things, too.

We always enjoy it.

I had some of the same concerns as you about the different dinner selections that Boma offers, so to compromise, we tried breakfast there. We LOVE it!! We have been there twice for breakfast & will return again in May - this will make our 3rd time in 6 months. I've thought again about trying it for dinner, but we're never out that way for dinner. Breakfast always works in our schedule better.

Crystal Palace is another one of my favorite breakfasts, but the dinner isn't bad. My favorite sit-down dinner at the MK is definitely Liberty Tree Tavern. But, if you're eating at CP for breakfast, this might be too many characters in one day. If you're looking to take a break - we usually do this in the afternoon - between lunch & dinner. Then go back refreshed for the evening. If you do a later seating for breakfast at the CP, you may not need 3 "meals" that day. We frequently do a later breakfast, earlier dinner & maybe a mickey bar somewhere in the middle. ;) HTH! :)

Strange foods...ummm..no, not unless you don't like prime rib, chicken, pork, etc. There are wonderful salads, potatoes, desserts. There is nothing strange about the food at Boma.

Boma has become our favorite WDW restaurant. Admittedly, my family likes to try new foods. However, I don't remember there being anything on the buffet that you wouldn't recognize. Nothing is all that odd. That being said, have you considered O'Hana's?

I wouldn't go out of my way for Boma, we weren't thrilled, but resort to resort travel - particularly from AKL is a real pain in the nether regions. I'd be tempted, since its your MK day, to do a MK resort restaurant if you choose not to do Boma.

The Boma buffet is extensive, and there should be enough on it that you won't be stunned by the unusual foods.

I haven't eaten at Boma yet, but we're planning it for the first night of our November vacation...we ARE exotic foods lovers, so if you really hate trying new things and your kids do too, my guess is you won't enjoy it at all! The menu looks WONDERFUL to me, though! :drinking1

You don't have to go back to your resort first if you make PS for another resort...just take that resort's bus back from the park. That's what we plan to do the night we go to Boma (not staying at AKL). Good luck!

Have two picky eaters, we have the 'one bite' rule, and they ended up eating a ton at Boma! 4 & 6 year old daughters.

The desserts are awesome, I thought.

Although we can't go back now because 6 yo developed allergy to peanuts and that's one of the restaurants that uses them...

Now I love ethnic foods of all kinds and differents spices. One of my favorite things to do on vacation in different countries and the Caribbean is to try the local food. I however, didn't really care for Boma and neither did my husband. The 5 of us found enough food to eat for dinner, but it wasn't my favorite place to eat and I've never returned since last year. We did spend the night at AKL so it was easy, but even if we stayed again, I wouldn't go back.

Maybe we can start an auction site! I adored that butternut soup, too!

When you make your PS for BOMA, let the CM know that there is a dietary issue with some of the foods.

The chef will likely come out and discuss what foods are good and which to stay away from.

DH has an allergy to something in Curry- and the chef was GREAT!!

HTH.....

We stayed at AKL too and tried Boma for the same reason, convenience. We had a party of 4, we are not picky eaters, and no one really liked Boma except for the desserts. Another time DH and I tried Boma for breakfast because of all the recommendations from the board. While it was OK, it was nothing spectacular and we wouldn't choose it again.

My suggestion would be take the monorail to the Grand Floridian Cafe. I think it's one of Disney's little "secrets". We've eaten there for lunch and dinner and had delicious meals both times. Casual, yet nice atmosphere, for lunch we had a delicious burger, and for dinner we had an equally, if not more delicious salmon. The chocolate fondue for dessert is AWESOME!!! Chocolate Orange Gnache with bananas, strawberries, pineapple, marshmallows, and I think one other thing for dipping. YUM!!! We will definitely go back in November.

It will get you out of the park for a while, give you a "thinking" break and you can decide then whether to head back to your resort, or go back to the park for a while.

Tried Boma once and didn't like it... I'd give it a second try, but at this point I wouldn't expect too much. I'm a pretty adventurous eater, so didn't find anything too foreign or bad... just nothing that *good*, either. My SO isn't an adventurous eater and has basically sworn off ever going again. :)

Boma is one of our favorite breakfast places. Everyone in our family loves it, even the picky ones. It is not out family's favorite for dinner. There was plenty of food and a real good variety of exotic and non-exotic foods. Our picky eater barely ate. The rest of us tried lots of items, but found it to be just OK. We won't be making dinner plans there again.
