DW is looking to go back to work after 15 years as a SAHM. She is having trouble with the objective portion of a resume. I'm no help as I haven't had to use one in 30 years. She has a degree in business management and spent 12 years as a bookkeeper/office worker and 3 years as a general office worker (typing/phones/mail etc). I know many of you have been through this many times so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I always say something like: To obtain a challenging ________ position with opportunity for advancement.

Or something to that nature. Fill in the blank with the type of position she's looking for. Management, administrative, etc.

Actually you don't need to have an objective portion if you have also included a cover letter.

A cover letter and resume should be specific for a particular position. This way you can highlight your skills with regard to that position. This is ESPECIALLY important if you are applying online. Computer programs look for certain "key words".

Just a suggestion, I was also a SAHM for a long time. I went to a Temp agency when I returned to the workforce. If benefits aren't a concern, it was a great way to ease back into things. I ended up getting hired full time by the company that they sent me to. This led to other opportunities.

Good luck!! :flower:

ITA This is how I got my first 'real' job out of college. Worked part time for a while then they hired me.

Now that you all mention it, I found the company I work for through a temp agency. I took a lesser position than I wanted but it has certainly worked out in my favor!!! Temp agencies are great!

I agree about both the objective and temp agency's. I can't remember the last time I had an objective on my resume. And frankly when reviewing resumes I never even bother to read the objective, the part I care about is where the person has worked in teh past and what their skills are. Even their education is secondary information at best. It's all about skills!

A nice thing about most temp agencies is that they offer free computer training in the basics.
