My mom, sisters, nieces, my daughter, and myself are going to Williamsburg next week. :cool1:

We need suggestions for a restaurant in the area that isn't too expensive like $15 a plate or less and has a kid's menu. This is our inexpensive get away and this year we are all trying to spend less.

We don't mind a chain as long as it is not one that is here in Richmond.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I'd suggest Food for Thought, we really liked it when we were there.

The Cheese Shop in merchant square has the best sandwiches for lunch. Be sure to get the house dressing.

Definitely The Cheese Shop in Merchant's Square. I'd also suggest Peter Chang's but that's up in Richmond area as well. The chains are all basically the same as the Richmond area I think.

We did too!!! Food for thought was great.

when we were there, my parents took my son to Dog street pub and really enjoyed that as well.

Seconding Food for Thought and The Cheese Shop.
Also, Pierce's Pit BBQ.

Taco Mexicali was really good. We happened to go on free kids night without even knowing it. Food for Thought was really good too, but more expensive.

Loved the Endive Salad at Dog Street Pub! My daughter and I still talk about it. The whole family did not care for Pierce's BBQ. Had lots of fun at the Hibachi restaurant (and found a coupon!).

Pierce's, Food for Thought, and Cheese Shop are my suggestions too. Retro's Good Eats met our expectations as well.

We just got home from Williamsburg a week ago!

Cheese Shop and Food for Thought not to be missed!

Another vote for Pierce'sBBQ and ThenCheese Shop. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!!!

Also, if in Yorktown, the Yorktown Pub.

We are thinking of going to VA beach and then Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Where are you going to stay while you are in Williamsburg? What is there to see and do there? I am still having a hard time choosing a hotel on the Beach. I am thinking Hilton Garden Inn but it is over $300/night.

We stay at a timeshare property and I have no idea what the nightly rate would be but I would assume high.

If doing breakfast, you may want to consider Five Forks Cafe. It's off the beaten path and seems like a hole in the wall but the food is really good and I felt the service was solid. Honeybutter's is I think a sister restaurant, though I could be wrong. IIRC that was pretty good as well.
A lot of people also like the Old Chickahominy House. We liked it, but it was kind of cramped.
With all of the really good places for breakfast around, my suggestion is not to even bother hitting a chain for breakfast as most of them can't hold a candle to the local businesses. Though I do love me some Cracker Barrel pancakes for some reason.

Another place I'd like to tell you about is Sno-to-Go. We had been to Williamsburg maybe 7 or 8 times over 11 or 12 years before we realized this place two years ago. We must have driven right past it a hundred times.
They have really nicely priced and generously portioned soft-serve ice cream and sno cones. The people there are really friendly and very understanding and adept when it comes to food allergies (that's a concern for us).

Also, although it's a chain Bruster's ice cream was really good as well. The people there were even more friendly and helpful than Sno-to-Go (which is not to take anything away from Sno-to-Go).

There was a Mexican restaurant in the New Town area of Williamsburg (next to It's Sugar) that we've been to a couple of times. We liked them a bunch as well. Definitely seemed budget friendly, if I remember correctly. Coupons might have been available somewhere as well.

So, between what I posted here and what I've posted before (Pierce's, Food for Thought, the Cheese Shop) I've given you some of our must-dos. Hope you enjoy!

BTW, be sure to ask for some "ends and dressing" at the Cheese Shop. It makes a great alternative to chips and is something that we're usually able to keep as an all day snack for the family. I also love their chicken salad (bacon and almonds in it, IIRC).

If you're going to Busch Gardens, our favorite is Das Festhaus. It has German food (yum!) but a bunch of other options as well, AC, and there's usually a show going on.

I went to college and law school in the 'burg and agree about The Cheese Shop.

Also, I love Sal's By Victor - a delish pizza parlor in a shopping center with a Food Lion on Richmond Rd. not too far from Merchant's Square/CW. My NJ-Italian uncle loved the pizza there so much, he had lunch and dinner there one day the last time he visited Williamsburg.

Oh, I almost forgot - we used to love Mama Steve's Pancakes on Richmond Road. I don't know if it is still around, though.

Seconded! I forgot about this one. We went there for the first time last year and liked it a bunch. Good food, good value, nice and casual.
