We are staying at the Ron Jon Resort in 2 weeks and have never been to that area. Any suggestions on great restaurants in the area that both adults and teens would like? Also, other than the Ron Jon store, any good shopping areas? Any fun places for my husband and I to get away for drinks an afternoon- preferably outdoors? Also, we have heard about gambling cruises nearby- anybody ever been on one and are they fun? THANK YOU for all of your help in planning our trip over the past few monthes!!

One of our favorites (will drive out of the way to eat there) is Dixie Crossroads in Titusville. Wonderful Rock Shrimp and other things are great, too.

We loved Grill's...right on the water....not fancy but good food and great atmosphere...think Jimmy Buffet style!!! All the local fishing boats pull in near there and there is always excitement at the dock...plus, on days when a ship departs you can see them coming down the channel...awesome!!!!

Plenty of teens/adults...we loved it!!!

A DIS'er after my own heart!!! Everytime we are in Florida, we have to make "at least" one stop at Dixie Crossroads. The rock shrimp and corn fritters, wow, I'm getting hungry just thinking about them!!! Here is their website address DixieCrossroads.com

Based on Andy's raves, we went to Dixie Crossroads in August 2003. Now we can't wait until we can go back. There is nothing like rock shrimp!

Another satisfied customer!!! I should have bought stock in Dixie Crossroads years ago!!! LOL!!! We have been visiting DC since they opened in 1983.

So I went to the web site, and the place sounds great. I have never had Rock shrimp, but love shrimp. How should I order it? Everyone said that it taste just like lobster. On the menu it said that you can have it fried, steamed or boilded. How do you guys order it?

thanks

Mmmmm, Rock Shrimp...

Split down the middle, broiled, with butter...

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Rodney Thompson sure has made a mint with that restaurant.

Other suggestions:

Coconuts in Cocoa Beach has great atmosphere and is right on the beach. The food is good and the teenagers would probably like it.

Mango Tree (also in Cocoa Beach) has wonderful food and ambience. Very nice for a romantic dinner for two.

A nice place to have drinks (and eat for that matter) is the Pier House restaurant. It sits at the end of Canaveral Pier out over the ocean.

For shopping, it really depends on what you are looking for. Cocoa Village (back across the causeway in Cocoa - on the Indian River) is a really cool little artsy sort of shopping/dining area. The nearest mall is probably Merritt Square. There are also malls in Melbourne. The best outlet shopping is in Orlando. When I go home to visit I usually don't do too much shopping. One thing to try is Grimaldi's Chocolates. They make chocolate covered potato chips that are to die for!

Verandah Man - Menu looks tempting. Thanks for the recommendation. I will need to keep this one in my back pocket for next time I do a land vacation at WDW. - Mike

Gambling

Oh, and I went on one of those SeaEscape day cruises to nowhere for the gambling and it wasn't worth it at all. You may want to think about hitting a casino on one of your ports of call.

One advantage of the gambling ships is that there are two of them, so they compete. Neither one charges any fare, and I think they both offer complimentary food.

Both ships are a fairly decent size. Sterling claims to have the largest casino ship in the world.

www.suncruzcasino.com and www.sterlingcasinolines.com.

Also, Sterling is within easy walking distance from the Ron Jon Resort.

The cocoa beach pier has some great restraunts Atlantic grille and Marlins sports bar.
For all you can eat seafood there is a littel (about 10 tables ) place called the Old fish house it is right after you turn onto 520 form A1A ina strip plaza
Bernards Surf has a lot of history to it that is where all teh astronauts use to go
There is a Lobster Shanty if you like those alweays crowded and we love the Fish House for all you can eat and atmosphere
If you are up to teh drive Ashleys pub ib Rockledge is a Haunted train station.. lots of histtory there and food is decent price...
Cocoa Village has some nice places to eat also but pricey Black Tulip and Cafe Marguex
And of course I grew up with Dixie Crossroads and they are Yummy
some cheap suggestions also are:
Kelseys Pizza, Kyota japense (early bird between 5-6)
Atlantic Grille has early bird (5-6)
Italian Courtyard has 2 for 1 meeals before 6
hope this helps.

I always order mine BROILED!!!

I have to second and maybe third the vote for Dixie Crossroads.

We have been return customers since they opened in 1986. I was not a shrimp/seafood fan until I sampled Dixie's rock shrimp. My MIL always looked for places that served them when we were visiting relatives in Florida. She wasn't happy until we found Dixie.

Another relative found the restuarant by accident when driving to Cocoa. They had just opened. We have enjoyed seeing the place expand and grow thru the years. It kinda reminds me of cabins on the lake which families add on to as the family gets bigger.

It is a wonderful relaxing place with great seafood and at a great price. They have a variety of different items that even land lovers like. Their steaks always look really good too. Never tried them because I always order 4 dozen rock shrimp.

If the rock shrimp are not in season and they don't have them, try the royal reds. They are wonderful too.

I agree with Verandah Man- Broiled Rock Shrimp is the best!!!

Hey Verandah man- have you checked out Dixie's new seafood market? Just opened this year. Will try it in May. You can get your rock shrimp to take home, all cleaned and ready to go.
