We decided to use the AARP and have a bacon'olla special at Denny's tonight. I had the triple bacon. This was the same meal I had several weeks ago. Tonight though, the red potatoes. were 8 pieces, the eggs were the smallest I have ever eaten. cheap generic toast. I was still hungry and not really a big eater. The meal I has several weeks ago had a huge portion of potatoes, the two eggs filled half the plate, the bacon was some of the thickest slices.

I guess instead of raising the prices, cut the meal in half....
I left hungry.

Maybe it was a senior special?

Friendly's has a special "seniors menu" with lower prices than the regular menu and the portions are also smaller.

If that was not the case, what did the waitress say? If you didn't mention it to the waitress at the time, then you have no basis to complain now.

Yep, Restaurants have to make up the difference in food costs some how. They do not want to pass these costs on to their customers. People will stop eating out. If you notice the packages on the shelves of the grocery stores have also been downsized.

I remember when our family of 4 would go out to eat and *IF* we got an appetizer we had leftovers to take home....now we eat the whole appetizer (sometimes 2) and everyone eats their whole meal. I realize my boys are growing, but Wow! Lately if we don't get an appetizer we leave hungry. I'd rather stay home and cook if that's the case! I don't mind prices going up if the value equals the cost. Sorry your meal was not optimal!

Food costs have gone up a lot so the choice is to raise the price or control expenses by reducing the portion size or buying a cheaper product.

I just went to Denny's last week. I was dissappointed to say the least. There was hair in both mine and my cousins meals. Also, we both got burgers and fries. The burgers were decent sized still but we couldn't have gotten more than 10 fries on the plate. I was PO'd because that was my favorite part. They also told us that the wait time for our food was going to be over an hour. Couldn't figure that one out since there were only 5 other families in the whole place. It makes me want to stay home from now on.

That would make me so . I found hair in my Chick-fil-a Burrito after biting into it:sick: It was a horrible experience as that morning I had just left the Cancer center from getting my treatment. My husband took it back and showed the manger the whole thing during rush hour, the hairs were cooked into the egg:sick:. I can not even eat those things again.

The portion sizes are all getting smaller and the food taste horrible. I love eating at home better. It's a lot of work making homemade food, but my family is worth it:goodvibes

I have noticed this too. I also notice the quality of the food is going down....cheaper meat cuts, etc....

We don't even enjoy eating out much anymore.

In the long run smaller serving sizes will be a good thing for many of us Americans.

I haven't noticed a decrease in portion sizes, but I don't eat at Denny's and I am not a big eater. I agree that portion sizes have been way too big for years now. Unfortunately, people want to see huge amounts of food on their plates or they don't believe they are getting their money's worth.

We don't eat out much but when we do it's usually Logan's. DS and I always split an entree and order an extra side because 2 entrees is just way to much food! They've never charged us a split plate charge either.

I used AARP for the discount, it is not off the senior menu.

That is what I mean, like your order of fries, that was the best part of the meal when you look forward to that included tasty side and find it is just a garnish.
I remember ordering just an appetizer of the taco chips half portion and it was huge! Now the regular portion feeds one.

There was one waitress in our section, well over worked. we waited 22 minutes to have our order taken, and no one had asked would we like drinks. It took another 20 minutes to get the meal and finally a cup of coffee. There was a family prior to ours and a couple after us.

My dd ordered the BBBLT, it was to be triple the bacon, $8.95, it looked like a regular BLT to me. The tomato was sliced so thin and one piece of Lettuce. There was a third slice of toast in it.

AARP card has been great, as is my AAA now that I try to find all the bargains I can.

Between 4pm and 10pm I think it is 20% discount, all day is free coffee. The AAA book has tons of retailers, from PAYLESS Shoes, tires, Heavenly ham, Disney shops, I ask every place now. Especially if it is a day trip to a tourist site, the zoo, Niagara passes.

I had just put $35.00 in my gas tank, for 8.5 gallons of gas. I wanted a meal that would be filling. I felt used even leaving a tip.

Quantity and Quality, customer service was the pits!

The next complaint while minimal is the Sam's Club roaster chickens. . It use to be a 5lb roaster, it is around 3 lbs now. One feed our family, now I buy 2. It is still is a good buy at $4.99 each.

:confused3 And why did you save your complaints to post on the DIS instead of questioning your server???

Well, if you look at any online menu, and look at the calories, you will find it very rare to find a chain restaurant entree under 1000, even those that sound healthy. If you figure one usually should eat about 500 calories at most during a meal, those little portions are probably still more than one should be eating.

I totally agree with you!
I also agree with those who say portions are too big anyway. Anyone eating out should google the caloric intake/fat grams/sodium intake of the meal they eat. Many restaurants have this information posted...you might think the salad is healthy but chances are it isn't . Most portions these days are at least enough for 2. I always eat half and bring other half home.

OP be thankful you had money for food, you got to eat out and enjoy it. It isn't the end of the world that your portion was smaller...maybe the one you got previously was not normal size and extra large for some reason. Sometimes we need to act like adults and not whine cause we didn't get enough food.... you don't want to have to get POOH SIZE PANTS from eating too much!

Sorry but when there are hungry people, people dying of cancer, people whose homes are flooded, etc. and people complain about things like portion sizes, another thread someone is whining about people commenting on coupon use, etc. People need to realize how lucky they are with what they have. My attitude didn't used to be like this BUT this past year has caused me to not sweat the small things. Right now I have a friend who has a teenage daughter who is terminal with cancer...on Monday that girl has to decide what she wants to do on treatment. She is 18. I daily see the face of my best friends daughter.....she lost her mom last year and she is 15. Some idiot in Indianapolis set a house fire cause he was mad at landlord....killed his girlfriends mom and her brother. Think of kids with bloated bellies cause they don't have enough food.

Sorry for the rant but.....

Enjoy your food.....

I think you should try out Rainforest Cafe. We went there for Mother's Day since it is my mom's favorite restaurant. It was me, DH, mom, DD19, DD15. This is what we ordered:

Me: appetizer pita quesadilla which I ate as my meal (free with Safari card)
DH: calypso salad (no chicken)
mom & DD19: shared the steak, shrimp and ribs entree
DD15: pastalaya

So we got 2 entrees, an entree salad and an appetizer for the 5 of us. I took home half of my quesadillas, DH brought home half of his salad, DD15 brought home 2/3 of her pasta and my mom/DD19 brought home part of their entree.

With 5 of us we ordered 3 entrees and 1 appetizer and ended up bringing home half of everything!!!

I agree on a couple of thing. I have noticed that the sizes of servings have decreased at a lot of the local places we eat at. Prices have stayed about the same or slight increase. Servings sizes in general are too large to be healthy. Thing is, DH and I would often share or DGS and I would. Many places now are not quite big enough to share. It's just a fact and we just deal and continue to eat these places. We would never take the size of serving out on the server. She has nothing to do with it. WE have also noticed less servers but this is not really their fault either.

I think the closest rain forest cafe for me and the OP might in atlantic city.. not really a trip around the block. ;)
