If you're planning a NYC trip, have fun! A little more info would help, specially since there are hundreds of choices--when I type in a Manhattan ZIP and refine it to restaurants within 5 miles, I get 415 hits.
Does the party of 6 contain young kids and are you looking for kid friendly?
What part of NYC: just Manhattan? Just Midtown or are you going to venture Uptown, Downtown, out to Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey, the Bronx?
If you don't know what part of NYC, do you have the ZIP for the place you're staying?
Are you adventurous eaters or would you like to stick with American and pizza? A couple of my faves on the site are Cafe Espanol (great Spanish cuisine) and Bann (Korean) but not everyone is willing to go with that.
Are you looking for budget or thinking of a splurge?
Maybe tell us some of your favorite WDW eateries to give us an idea what to recommend.

4 children 2 adults near ripleys beleive it or not in Manhattan. Children are not picky.

I do recommend that you venture to other areas of the city--there's so much more to see outside the Times Square area. Good restaurants too!

I love NYC! DH and I are flying out in the morning for a long weekend. It is so much fun to just get out and explore the city. Be sure and get tickets to a show. I like Tribeca and SoHo. Central Park has so many great places. The kids would like the South Street Seaport and the Brooklyn Bridge. While you're there go to Brooklyn. It has a whole different feel than Manhattan. Take the Staten Island Ferry for a view of the Statue of Liberty.

Agreed! Go down to South Street Seaport and then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and explore Brooklyn Heights! I am a Jersey girl who is in the process of moving to Brooklyn Heights and I am just starting to explore my new neighborhood but I love it! We have beautiful park that goes right along the East River. If you want to take the Subway down (the kids will love it!) take the #2 heading downtown to Clark St. Have a blast!

I live in NY (In Astoria, Queens) and the best tip I can give you is GET OUT OF TIMES SQUARE! The prices are all higher because EVERYONE knows that's where the tourists are. That's also probably where the pickpockets are. That being said just walking a few blocks away will get you to some great places. I love an Italian place called Amarone (after the grape) it's not exactly for kids, but a great place none-the-less. The American Girl Store also has a restaurant, so it naturally has children friendly foods. I believe they seat with specific table times, not reservations, so I'd call in advance. The plus is that the staff is expecting children to be there. Mars 2112 is fun and is in the Times Square area and I think the Jekyll and Hyde club is a blast. It's really a fun interaction place with actors (you'll know who the characters are) Also Ninja down between Duane and Reade Sts is super fun and you get to leave the Times Square are. I went there for a friend's surprise 30th birthday last year, but it was also loaded with kids. The bathroom was an extra special treat! If I can think of anything else I'll post it. Feel free to take a walk around a neighborhood look around. NYC restaurants don't get busy until around 7, 730 so if you eat earlier than you can get walk ins at most neighborhoody-places.

I was going to say avoid Mars2112...the food is inedible!!!

Lifetime in NYC, and I think we are famous for pizza for a reason! There is a little sports bar, Shorty's, on 9th ave between 41 and 42 streets that specializes in cheese steaks,...kids welcome. Chinese food here at any FF joint might be better than what you get at home! 9th avevue in that area, Hell's Kitchen, has many good restaurants from about 45th to 49th streets.

Can anyone suggest a good breakfast/bagel place? We are staying around
10th and W. 50th, not that it has to be right in our exact area.

lisaj68, try Empanada Mama--not a breakfast place but they're open 24 hours and their cheese empanadas or apple empanadas would be yummy for breakfast.

They're on 9th Ave just north of 51st st so would be on your way to the subway or Times Square area. We often visit a friend who lives around the corner and make it a point to drop in there.

In the area is also Amish Market, 9th Ave. south of 50th St., which has a good bakery counter--a little expensive but it has some interesting pastries. Their online delivery menu is here but they also have other items in the store. There are a few tables where you can sit but it's not a restaurant.

There's also a small fruit market that has breads, rolls and milk on the south side of 52nd St. between 9th and 8th Avenues--it looks like a real hole in the wall but they have some of the best prices in the area for apples, bananas etc.

In case you're wondering how to tell whether a place is on the north or south side of the street, the NYC grid pattern makes it easy. Going north the street numbers go up, so "south of 50th St" would mean between 50th and 49th.

The Hotel Edison has a cafe/coffee shop. It is on 46th just off Broadway. It is nothing fancy, but it is fast and cheaper than you'll find a lot of other places. It is great for breakfast.

We just got back yesterday from our long weekend trip to NYC. We stayed at the Courtyard on 40th but went to the Edison for breakfast every morning. It filled us up enough that we didn't need another meal until late afternoon and we ended up eating only two meals a day and a snack after the show. (Kinda like the DDP - two meals and a snack ).
We went to the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) and I liked it better than the Empire State Building. Soho, Little Italy, and Chinatown are great places to explore. We went to the UN which was interesting and explored some neighborhoods on the Upper West Side. We also went to the Museum of Natural History which looked nothing like the movie (Night at the Museum), but was still good. Don't forget to go to the World Trade Center. There is a memorial museum nearby and the new tower is going up. I really enjoyed Bryant Park and the NY Public Library (but I'm a librarian).
