what is the best way to do this? do i see if i can get a table for 10 or are chances better if we split the group up?

If I were you I'd try to book for 10 people. If there is someplace you want to go that you can't book for your entire party only then would I try to book for 2 smaller groups.

I've booked for groups as large as 12. When booking any group bigger than four, I *always* offer (without being asked) to be split. Even when I have split ADRs, we've always been seated together.

I booked for 11 people on our last trip. I told the CM 11 people and often she would say she would have to split us up. When we got to the restaurant, we were never split up. Well, almost never..we had side by side tables at Crystal Palace.

I would tell the CM 10 people and let him/her do what is necessary to get you all in at the same time.

Good Luck!
