This is an excellent internet-based referral source for assistants grouped by specialty and zip code. I've gotten many referrals (senior care and PCA specialty) through them. This is not an agency but a source of private contractors . The listing is free for service providers. I'm not sure how much a 1 month help wanted listing costs. They provide background checks on service providers.

I'm no longer on top of this sort of thing, but years ago we had luck with the babysitting service Fairy Godmothers.
