I'm trying to decide where to stay for our 2009 trip. My Mom is in much need of a hip replacement and we do not know if she will of had the surgery before our trip and if she has what condition she will be in. I also will have a 2 and 8 year old. I've been considering Poly, POR, AKL and the FW cabins w/ golf cart rental. We are already planning to rent a ECV at the parks. What resort would you suggest and why with the group I have?

I'm looking forward to reading all the responses. My mom is also in need a hip replacement and I'm not sure if it will happen before or after our trip next June. Either way, I'm planning on renting an ECV for her...and also for my dad who is bound to a wheelchair. I do want to mention, that my mom had a hip replacement last summer and she recovered excellently and was using her cane exclusively 8 weeks post-op. She said it was the best thing she ever did and couldn't believe it took her so long to come to the decision for the hip replacement...unfortunately now, the other one needs replacing.

Anyways, my parents (mainly my dad) are very interested in the Contemporary. My dad was not excited about the buses in his wheelchair/ECV and knowing my dad...I think anyone who would be in the World June 10-14 will probably be thankful he's not on a bus between resorts and parks as well because he can be quite ornery at times. It just means they'll miss AK and HS which is sad since they've never been there, but that's a whole other post.

Basically, the main reason they are interested in the CR is because of the monorail and what I assume is an easy on and off from the monorail in a wheelchair/EVC. Financially, I think they like CR the best because, unless I am mistaken, I think it is the least expensive of the monorail resorts.

GL with your mom's hip replacement. I hope it goes as well, or even better than my own mother's did. :goodvibes

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

I would eliminate FW immediately, even with a golf cart. Just before I had my hip replacement I found it painful to walk more than 100 yards. She would be much better off renting an ECV from off-site. For example, corridors at AKL can be very long. My thought would be to stay at the Poly; to get to MK or Epcot you would use the monorail and only need bus for AK or HS.

And for Daisy, I have had more nights in Contemporary Tower than any other resort. I like that everything is just an elevator ride away. As far as bus, considering the location of the CR Bus Stop, as long as you are not trying to get to a park immediately at opening it is a good location for him to try using a bus. Especially as Disney tends to replace their oldest buses, a much higher percentage have ramps and not lifts.

I wasn't sure which would be better. Wouldn't the ECV take up a lot of space in the room? It will be just myself, my Mom and the 2 kids sharing the room. So it's not like she will have her own room.

I'm very surprised you said not to consider FW. When I stayed last at FW (2006) you could park the golf carts right at the bus stops and be virtually no walk. Now the boat to MK would be a little bit of a walk, but she makes herself go. She tries not to give in to the pain. I did remind her that walking up to the parks from the bus stop could be a bit of a distance.

We are leaning towards Poly, but the price is what holds me back.

To avoid buses to DHS, you can monorail to EPCOT from the TTC, go through EPCOT and exit out the IG, and then take a boat (or use the path) to DHS. You'd have to have a park hopper pass though.

An ECV, especially the rentals, takes up less than eight square feet. A room at the Poly, for example, is 440 sq ft. Rooms in POR are 314 and those in AKL about 390. I'm not sure of the cabins at FW.

I am a recent WL fan but for access to all the parks, Poly is hard to beat. It has direct access to TTC, which gives you access to MK and EPCOT by monorail without a transfer and bus access to the other parks, plus with a ferry ride to MK you have bus access to all the other resorts.
