We'll need a cheap clean bed for 1 night before checking in to All-Star Music. Most of the hotel websites I've seen mention a resort fee, usually around $5 per night. What is this? (besides just another way of getting money out of us)

Here in Orlando, "fee" is a euphemism for "tax"...makes it go down easier. Don't worry...we locals get stuck with them, too.

A resort fee is not a tax. It's not imposed by any governmental authority. It's a fee that the hotels tack on to try to recoup some of the costs of "extras" such as parking, newspapers, pools, health clubs, etc. IMHO resort taxes are stupid, they should simply include it in the price of the room, as in 99% of cases they can not be waived.

Resort fees include wonderfull stuff like a USA Today. Have you thought about using Priceline?

Even if you get a room through Priceline, the hotels reserve the right to impose a "resort fee" at check-in. Check the fine print. At some hotels (the nicer the hotel, the more likely the fee, btw), I've read that people have been hit with these, as high as $12/night, mandatory. :sad2:
