Resolution question for DISigner Pros...

Hi Everyone,

I just started getting into DISigning and it has been brought to my attention that there are resolution problems with my files downloaded from Photobucket.

Here's the background:

All of my DISigns are done using PSE and saved at the appropriate size (for example a 10x10 autograph page is 10 inches by 10 inches) and at 300 ppi. I then save a copy as a jpg (also 300 ppi) and then upload it to Photobucket (free account). Upon downloading the file, it will still be the appropriate size, but now at 72 ppi. I have also tried another round-about way of saving the file as a jpg and upon saving this file to Photobucket and then subsequent downloading it, it will stay at 300 ppi, but the size will be much smaller than 10x10.

When you take either of these downloaded photobucket files and then upload them to artscow to be printed in a 10x10 photobook, I get resolution errors saying that the DPI is 80 something and the suggested DPI should be 300.

Is there something I am doing wrong? I'm assuming that Photobucket is changing my files to make them smaller in size. Are these 80 DPI files okay to be printed in a photobook by artscow?

I have noticed the same thing with other DISigner files. I have downloaded several 8x8 autograph pages (which are 72 ppi) from 4 or 5 different DISigners from photobucket and then uploaded them to artscow and all of them also give me an error.

Any suggestions or comments or is everything I am doing fine?

Should I pay the $20+ to get the "pro" access to photobucket, which I am guessing will allow me to save all of my files at their original size and resolution?

Any suggestions?

Let's see if I can make this make sense.

Web resolution is 72 dpi (ppi). Now many factors can affect how it is displayed most importantly what your monitor's resolution is set at. The "inch" part really doesn't do much when you're talking about the web. I try to DISign my newer stuff @ 100 dpi but it still gets "translated" to 72 dpi when it's displayed on the web. A 300 dpi file @ 10 inches should be 3000 pixels across. If it's not then something, probably Photobucket, is resizing it. You can get this information by right clicking on the picture and looking at Properties or View image info.

Photobucket is definitely resizing my images to keep them at 300dpi.

So the other question is the following...I can keep the image size, but at 72 dpi. When these are printed-up using shutterfly/artscow, is the image quality still okay (even though of the warning message about the low dpi)?

I've never used either so I can't comment on that. If you're printing a 3000 x 3000 dpi image on 10" x 10" paper it is being compressed to 300 dpi. I would say as long as the original pixel size has not been changed, just the dpi, it should print fine.
