resize program needed

I was using photoshop to resize, but these pics are bigger than it can handle. Between Vista not liking this older photoshop version and having a new camera, things aren't working as smoothly as they did in XP

I need something to downsize pics for email. Vista's windows email option doesnt work so well because it only lets me email one pic at a time and opens a new email for each pic. Anyone know of any that work well? Thanks?

I use Paint Shop Pro Photo for all of my photo editing including resizing

I think Irfanview is a stellar free image viewing/editing program. It's tiny, fast, and very powerful. It's not meant to do Photoshop-style editing, but for things like resizing, cropping, viewing, batch processing, etc, it's just about unbeatable.

To do one at a time, just open it in Irfanview and hit ctrl-R to resize. Make sure "Preserve aspect ratio" is checked and it's set to Resample/Lanczos rather than Resize.

If you want to do many pics at once, open one then hit B for batch processing. Add the photos you want to the list on the left, select an output folder, and go to "set advanced options". Check Resize, enter the settings, and again make sure that Preserve Aspect Ratio and Use Resample Function are checked.

Running Old Programs


To run a program in the compatibility mode, you need to locate the executable (.exe) file for the program you want to run. For example, if you want to run an old version of Adobe Photoshop, go to the Adobe sub-directory in your Program Files folder and locate Photoshop’s .exe file. Note: This trick will not work on the shortcut you may have created on your desktop for Photoshop. You have to manually locate the main .exe file in the directory where you installed the software. Once you have located the .exe file, right click on it and select Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and select the option of "Run this program in compatibility mode for." Below the checkbox, you will see a drop down list. Choose the operating system you were using the program with earlier and that’s it. Now, your old program is good to run with Windows Vista. Yes!

I learned about Irfanview from a different message board, and downloaded it to my laptop. I loved it!! So when we got our new PC and Photoshp Elements 5, oh yeah, and Vista I downloaded it there, too. Still works great. Problem is, it is default for EVERYTHING. I check boxes to make Windows photo gallery default, but no dice. Every time i load pictures from my card, they are "irfanview jpegs", not regular jpegs. It's aggravating to say the least. I don't want to delete the program, because it is very helpful. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Vista can be funny about these kind of things, because it tries to have you run as a user with diminished rights, and changing the associated program may not always "take". (As time goes by, I like Vista less and less... Most all the tech folks I know, including myself, have gone back to XP.)

First thing is to tell Irfanview to not try to grab the extensions any more. Go to Options, then Properties, then the Extensions tab. Uncheck the ones you don't want it to open (or "clear all" then recheck the ones you do want it to open). That'll take care of that. If you close and reopen Irfanview and they're still checked, close Irfanview then right-click the shortcut and I believe there's an option called "Run as administrator" (or similar) - do that, OK the warning, then change those options. That should keep Irfanview from trying to open those, and any other program can then do it.

Thank you!!! Never even visited that tab. I was trying all sorts of checkboxes and such in the control panel and other ones on the program. I believe that did it! Just put my CF card in, and the box that popped up was Windows, not the "big red bear".

Folks, don't get me wrong, Irfanview is a GREAT program, and I use it often. But I want to use it when I want to use it

Yes do file- "save for web" and change the size, apply- I always rename it too.
