I'm new to this, but we're moving closer to buying into DVC. I've got a reservation/transfer question. Assume I'm looking to reserve a room for a week that costs about 300 points, but I only have 280 points. Can I reserve the room and then later transfer points (or purchase more points) to get me to 300, or must I have all 300 points available in my account at the time of reservation?

You have to have 300 points available at the time of the reservation. If you don't have enough of banked or current UY points, you can borrow from the next year.

Or, as you say, you can have someone transfer in the points, but that would have to be done before hand.

Recently, MS began allowing (at the 7 month mark) members to "buy" up to an additional 24 points to complete a reservation. So, that is always an option.

Banked and Current (pts from UY when trip will take place) and Borrowed (pts from upcoming UY allotment) points can be part of 300.

MS will not book unless the points are readily available at time you call so you can't accumulate the points needed later.

If you do not have enough Banked,Current,Borrowed points available then you can 'rent' up to 24pts from MS to complete the reservation at $15 per (these 24pts can be accessed only once per Use Year & can only be used to reserve at 7mos booking window so let's say to book last day of your trip then you'd need to call to book that particular date 7mos before)

A transfer of points to your account from another member can happen only one time per Use Year & would need to be done before calling to book and those transferred points must be valid for use at time trip will take place ( you may want to check with MS before the transfer actually happens to be sure those transferred points can in fact be used for what you're planning ).
