I don't know if I am posting in the right area but... I made reservations for our family for Dec. 30-Jan.5. I knew the Free Dining started Jan. 1, so I asked that we take advantage of that (since we have 3 children). I told the agent that we would just buy our own food for the 30th and the 31st then start with the free dining on the 1st. The agent said we would need TWO diff. reservations. One for room only and one for the other 4 nights with free dining. Okay, sounded weird to me but whatever. Then I ask "what will I do about tickets for the 31st?" They tell me that I will need to buy a 1 day base tic for 5 people and then my other tics will start on the 1st. Does this sound weird to anyone else?

I'd try posting your question over on the resort board, but...

YES, you do need two separate reservations (you should try for the room only discount for the first two days - if available).

NO, you don't need to get a second set of park tickets. You'll do an "early pick up" of the tickets for your second reservation. You may be able to do this at the resort, but you'll likely have to go ask at Guest Services at a park. You may also end up with tickets that are separate from your KTTW card (though, again, the resort may be able to add your tickets to the KTTW).

Nope, that's the way it works. You have to have the two reservations in order to take advantage of the free dining. And the free dining requires a ticket with it. You can buy tickets that will cover your full stay on the first package and then 1 day tickets for everyone on the 2nd (with the free dining) and use the 1 day tickets on a later trip if you wanted.

I'm not sure if anything is out there since it's over New Years, but also check out room only discounts, it might be a better option for your full trip.

Needing two reservations is correct. As crashbb said, though, I think you should be able to tie your tickets to the second (free dining) reservation and simply pick them up early. So, if this is right, I think your reservations would look like this:

Reservation 1:
check-in on 12/30 for two nights, room only

Reservation 2:
check-in on 1/1 for 4 nights, free dining, and 4-day tickets (or 5-day, not sure if you're planning on going to the parks on your check-out day)
pick up the tickets early at Guest Services on 12/31
