I have a question for those with experience. If you rent points from a DVC member and discover when you arrive that the resort is not a good match for you...are you able to transfer the value of the points that you have paid for towards accommodations at another resort if something is available? This is a first time renting for me. :confused3 Thanks!

I would actually say it is up to the person that rented you the points, but once accomodations are secured, confirmation sent to you, and full price paid, they are pretty much done with the deal. Or at least most contracts are set up that way.

If you reserved a reservation from CRO, showed up and found out that the resort was not suited to you, would you expect them to let you move to a new resort? I don't think so.

Many people have posted doing this through CRO. There was just someone on the resorts board who moved from POR to the Poly. Of course, they have to pay the difference in the rate.

It would be difficult with points, especially if you are not the member.

Since you have never rented before, you might not be aware that you will be renting a reservation from a DVC member, not from Disney. The DVC member owns the reservation. You won't be able to make any chances to it yourself. If you show up at the resort and absolutely hate it and want to stay somewhere else, Disney cannot cancel that reservation and book one at another resort without the member's consent. And, since you would be canceling the original reservation on or after your check-in day, the points are forfeited. In other words, even if the member was willing to do this for you, I don't believe they could. You would have to book and pay for a new reservation.

Renting from a DVC member is nothing like reserving though Disney. For example, many members who rent their points have a no refund policy. Once they commit their points to your vacation, it can create a hardship for them if you cancel. You get to stay at a great resort for a fraction of the price but you give up some flexibility. So it's very important that you do your homework and make sure you are completely comfortable with your chosen resort and with the rental process before you proceed.

Well said Lisas!:thumbsup2 There probably would not be a DVC Vacancy available at the last minute. We work hard to get our reservations. Most of us book at the 8-11 month window to get our home resort.

Thank you LisaS for your informative response. Since I am new, I was not aware of the policies. I appreciate you taking the time to explain rather than giving a curt, unfriendly response. If some of the other replies are indicative of how friendly people on this board can be regarding a simple question, I will look into other places for answers rather than here!:duck:

The other folks who responded here are actually really, really, really nice people and very helpful. I think they were just being efficient in their responses.

So welcome to the DISboards and if you have any other questions about renting from a DVC member, don't hesitate to ask.

Background: We as DVCers talk a lot about the whole issue of renting points. Lots of people feel like many DVCers undervalue their points by renting them at $10 a point, when the actual rate to rent a room would make the points worth about $15 a night.

But posts like yours are a good example of why renting DVC points is such a good deal.....there's a tradeoff in control.

Take the other options: If you rented from CRO, you'd pay a lot more, but you would probably be able to trade your room IF there was availability, but again, it would probably cost you even MORE money.

Even us as DVC members would likely find it unlikely to trade a resort after we got to Disney. You have to cancel before you get there or you lose points. Even to trade a room assignment costs money.

Sorry for the terse response. I was mostly reacting to the post before me saying it was actually up to the person renting you the points. I could just imagine someone at WDW right now reading that post and saying "honey it says here it is up to the renter, I think you should call Mrs. X right now and have her move us to a different resort".

On the other hand, I was also reacting somewhat to the notion of switching resorts after arrival because it isn't a "good match". I have to be honest and say it irked me a bit. I am just one of those people who research the heck out of things I am buying and can't fathom arriving at a resort not knowing basically what it looks like, what the amenities are, what activities are available, and so on. That's just me... so I apologize if I offended anyone.

LisaS is the best... I have always been amazed by her knowledge and resources. I actually think at times she is an undercover CM. LisaS has always been a good and patient explainer too.

Lastly, you can't escape us... we're on all the discussion boards. It's an addiction..... :goodvibes

Thank you for the kind clarifications. :) I had no intentions of offending anyone. I had read on the resort threads that some people change resorts after they arrive for one reason or another. I have never had occasion to do so. I have enjoyed each resort that I have stayed at so far. I am quite excited to stay at SSR and have looked at many pictures, especially the lovely pool. Just three and 1/2 more weeks and I'll be there! I can't wait!
