Reservation "change" vs. cancellation

So, I've finally convinced myself that I should trust the TP park ratings, and am trying to flip our AK and Epcot days (10/11 and 10/12) to Epcot and AK. Right now, I have a reservation to Akershus for 10/12 that I am trying to shift to 10/11. I plan on making my final effort the morning of 10/11.

If I remember correctly, the cancellation requirement for Akershus would be to cancel by 11:59:59 on 10/10. If I get the 10 Akershus, and "change" my reservation rather than outright cancel, will that allow me to bypass the cancel/no-show fee for 10/12?

I was told by a Dining CM that I could make such a change when I asked her about doing something like that when I booked a CRT that I wasn't sure about, but I don't know if she was placating me or was speaking the truth.

I don't believe that the computerized reservation system will consider that a change. I believe it will see this as a cancellation. You may be able to get a CM to override the no-show fee based on booking a different ADR but I wouldn't count on it.

So my safe option will be to make a last minute check before I go to bed on 10/10 and act on that.

I understand Disney's concern - that a cancellation the night before doesn't leave much time to fill the void, but if there is an opening for me to take, I've giving them another day to fill the void that would have existed. Now that I think about it though, since the cancellation and no show policies are the same, the 10/11 reservation would need to be cancelled 10/9. If someone is going to eat the cancellation charge, there is no reason to bother cancelling. If things work out they go, if not they pay the fee. The likelihood of something being available on the morning of 10/11 is minimal at best.
