OK, there have been three times that we've booked vacations online where we've taken and paid extra for the travel insurance.
I realized now that we were buying something that WE ALREADY HAD though our credit card company. If we book and pay for our vacation with a certain credit card we have, they COVER OUR TRAVEL INSURANCE automatically though the credit card!
FOR US, our credit card covers WAY more than the insurance that could be purchased through the travel site! It covers accident, health/medical, emergency, transportation and even DELAYED LUGGAGE! If your luggage is delayed for 18 hours or more, they refund you $300 per bag to purchase the items you need until your luggage arrives! IF It's LOST for good- they pay you up to $2,000 per bag!
ALSO, many credit cards offer a lost passport or lost ID service. THEY will work with the companies to get a new passport to you with in 1-2 days! THEY do all the work.
We opted for the extra insurance on our credit card (ABOVE AND BEOND THE FREEservices listed above), which cost $120 per YEAR and that covers you:
To and from the airport (any car accident, illness, death injury or lost items)
ANY illness while on vacation, any prescriptions needed, any medical transportation, any medical costs
Loss of items, theft or otherwise
transportation back home or extended hotel costs if you need to stay longer due to a hospital stay.
I just took insurance off of our upcoming vacation, because it cost $40 per person just for the ONE STINKIN trip! We're paying less for travel insurance for an ENTIRE YEAR! And, we take more than one vacation each year, so it's worth it!
SO, PLEEEEAAAASE...if you look at the services your credit card offers, you may save yourself A LOT of money. We went through the travel services that our card offers with a fine tooth comb, read it, re-read it and completely understand it- and it covers MORE than the crappy travel insurance offered through most travel sites...
The guy that I spoke to on the phone through our credit card co. said that most people aren't even AWARE that this service is offered just by having the card- no purchase is needed of it or anything.
It covers a huge RANGE of travel- even if you are out of town for the weekend! You just have to pay for the hotel/travel package with the credit card and you're set!
