Are there any dis advantages of buying resale versus from DVC directly?

If so what are they?

I have ADDONITIS

Advantages:

Resale - save thousands

Direct - get pts faster
- can sometimes talk your guide into helping you book a tough 1st reservation as part of the deal
- have the option of using pts for overpriced cruise and hotel trades

...so resales do not have some of the options for trading out (no cruises or poly stays) and can take up to 2 months to close. but the savings can be huge.

But you can bank and borrow resale contract points? Right?

You just cant book anything other than DVC Resorts?

except for trading out for cruises and certain hotels (like the poly), resale contracts work exactly like direct contracts.

actually, you can trade out for RCI resorts, subject to availability.

there are a few other BVTC options (like intrawest resorts) that you can trade out for, subject to availability.

but realistically, if you want to buy into DVC, it should be almost exclusively for the purpose of staying in DVC resorts. that is where the value is.

If you were planning on using points for a cruise, which most people would not recommend anyways, don't go resale. They will not allow booking cruises on resale points.

Resales will save you some money in the end but contracts will be shorter in time of usage verses direct.

this is untrue.

contracts expire based on their home resort, not whether you purchase direct or resale.

some resales have more pts than direct contracts (as they include banked pts). some direct contracts have more pts than resales, if the resale is "stripped" and has already used pts through the 2013 use year.

but a BLT contract will expire in 2060 whether you buy it resale or direct. a BCV contract will expire in 2042 whether you buy it resale or direct.

There is no usage option worth spending the extra money for retail, NONE, well maybe one exception, the fixed week HI option for a limited few. There may be other issues such as availability of points resale, financing for those that choose to do so or comfort level. In some cases the cost differences isn't large enough to justify resale, esp for small add ons.

Isn't the other difference between resale and direct is that for resale, your DVC cannot be passed down or deeded. You can only deed your DVC if you buy direct correct? That is what I was told but wanted someone to confirm.

What you were told was incorrect. Resale contracts are a deeded interest at a resort the same as direct and can be transferred or included in an estate.

Thanks for all the responses i guess i am going to see what is available thru DVC when i am there in April and get the low down and compare then. Prices through DVC are they negotiable if there is inventory at an older resort like BCV or OKW?

To date, DVC has not been wiling to negotiate.

I'm a bit of a research junky so I looked into DVC for YEARS. I am also a Disney junky so I really really wanted the numbers to work but I couldn't get the return to come quickly enough (although, I will admit that I didn't take into consideration the discount on annual passes etc. so my calculation wasn't 100%). I just couldn't justify spending the money. We took a tour and it would have been about 20k just to get us started.

A few years went by and I came across an email with resale listings and I was shocked. We bought almost immediately. We bought more points than we were considering directly through Disney and we paid about 40% less. Plus we got a loaded contract. So we are really really enjoying or first year or two with all of these points.

The inability to book a cruise isn't a concern for us. When I did the math we would have never been able to do it anyway. Too many points. I do wish we could book at some of their other opt-out resorts, but I've read over and over again that it doesn't make financial sense. We can utilize RCI and the other one. Although, with Vero, Hawaii and Hilton Head we really do have some great options not at WDW.

Unless you have money to burn I say go resale. We did and we are thrilled. Good luck! You will love it!
