Hi...I hope someone can help w/my questions! I have spoken w/my DVC sales person - Randy Krueger and informed him that I would like to add on at VWL, use year October. He said that he will keep an eye out for me, and add me to his list. I only need about 25-30 points to add to my 150 points originally purchased. My questions are:

1. Do I have a better chance of getting my request filled via Resale?
2. What is the minimum number of points that you can buy if going through Resale?
3. How expensive are the closing costs?
4. Who should I call at the Resale Timeshare Store? I've been reading good things about Shontell, do I ask for her or does she have a direct line?

Thanks for any assistance!!! This boards are always very helpful!!

I'll take a stab at answering:

1. The add-ons at VWL are all going to come from resales. Disney gets their inventory for add-ons from ROFR or foreclosure.

2. I believe the smallest contract size issued is 25 points.

3. For small contracts you are probably at the minimum charges in the range of $300 - $450.

4. We used Pat Spell there and highly recommend her.

Hope this is helpful (and accurate for 1, 2, and 3!).

For such a samll add-on, I would recommend going directly thru DVC. With resale, the transaction charges will eat you up on such a small contract! ($300 on a 30 pt contract would come to $10 per point) Also, you are likely to be able to score a small amount of points thru your Guide, and all you'll have to do is wait until he/she can get some points and then sign at the Mickey Ears and Palm Trees.

Good luck.

Hi -- I'm having the same questions. Here's what I have learned in the last couple of weeks -- correct me if I'm wrong. It may explain why you are getting two different answers!

a. The add-on price for sold-out resorts through Disney is $84/pt, and is not going up in the near future.

b. Resale asking prices for resorts like VWL, BCV, and BWV are around $72-76/pt. Some contracts have extra points, some are completely stripped (e.g. no points coming til 2005).

c. The closing costs at DVC by Resale (Shontell & Co.) for a small contract (less than 50 pts) are $375.

d. There are apparently long lists for small contracts at both Disney and the resale companies.

So I'm guessing that the differences between going with Disney and going resale on a small contract are very particular.

For example, if you found a small resale contract with extra points and a low price -- and it passes ROFR, which seems to be happening a lot now -- you would get a good deal.

However, if you were offered a small resale contract at $74/pt plus closing costs, it would cost about the same as the Disney $84/pt. The Disney transaction might be less stressful, if your guide is helpful.

Unless I'm missing something, it's six of one, half a dozen of another...

BTW, Shontell answers all of her email, and is extremely nice.

Take care,
nhw

Thanks for that email NHW!

Do you, or anyone else who may read this, have Shontell's email? I may call my DVC salesperson - Randy and ask him for advice. It sounds like it may end up costing the same if I went through Resale or Disney, but, like you said, would be less stressful through Disney. I'm just wondering if it would be better to have both sides covered to see which one becomes available first!

Thanks again!

Don't discount resale. One can get a full service closing for $250 plus the transfer fee. Oncan get it done for even less with extra work and involvement. Why not work on it through DVC and look for a resale at the same time. I would agree that for a very small amount of say 40 or less, it'd be just as good or better to get it done through DVC directly. Just don't limit your options when you don't have to.

Closing of $250 + the transfer fee of $100=$350, which adds the cost of $10 per point for a 30 point contract. If you pay $74 per point, you are actually paying $84 with closing fees. However, this may be a good way to go if the small contract has banked points with it. It would not be good if there were no banked points, especially if you don't get the current year's points.

I agree that you should try both ways, but going thru resale you will need to get on a waitlist for a contract with points. Disney may end up being faster. I do think they are easier--I have done three resales now, and I don't think they are as easy as doing it thru Disney. Disney is painless, and stupid-proof, which is an advantage for me.;)

We had good luck finding our 2 small resale packages and weren't even on waiting lists in order to get them. With the closing costs, really it comes out about the same, unless you can find a package that already has points then I think you really come out ahead. Check dvc-resales.com and dvcresales.com on a regular basis. They update their inventory very frequently.

We are waiting for ROFR for our 2nd package and was told by our salesperson that Disney isn't buying much back at all these days.

If you do the math, all the add-ons that Disney sells are the hand-picked resales that Disney chooses to buy back. Why not go to the source of all the resales, instead of waiting for Disney to buy back those precious few points and accommodate those on the waiting list.

Just my 2 cents...
