If you buy resale points, can you rent them out if you do not use them? Thanks.

you technically cannot rent points at all, resale or direct.

you are actually making a reservation with the pts and renting that...so if you can make a reservation at a DVC resort (which is possible with either resale or direct pts), then you would be allowed to rent it.

DVC has a rule against commercial renters, so if you plan to rent more than 20 times per year, you might run into trouble.

it is also possible that not all would-be DVC landlords are successful in renting their pts. so there is risk involved...but it doesn't matter whether you buy direct or resale.

And you don't really "rent" the reservation. You sell it to someone who wants to buy it. You maintain ownership until they check in, but once they check in, they have control. So if they ask the guy at the desk if a one bedroom is available because they are only in a studio, and you have points available, you just might be selling them the one bedroom for the price of the studio. Or if they trash the room, you get to pay for repairs. Or if they cancel their credit card when they hit $1499 before it get billed to the card, you get stuck with the bill.
