Resale contract with points in holding advice

We recently closed on a BRV contract with 132 points in holding. We are ok with this and know the rules. But....

When I posted on the ROFR , I received some feedback that some of you have had luck requesting that MS move those resale contract points out of holding so they could be banked or used without restrictions.

Well, we've asked 3 times and have been told no 3 times. We also asked if we could use the points for one of our 2 stays in the next 60 days. Nope.

Again, we are ok with trying to use them before they expire in March, but if we could use them without restrictions, that would be much better.

If anyone has been successful getting those resale contract holding points moved and has any advice, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks.

If this contract is in the same membership as the reservation, do the modification yourself, assuming the trip was not booked with home resort advantage and the new contract is a different one.

If it meets those rules, just go in, modify, choose the contract with the holding points as well and rebook without changing. The online system will pick them up for your current trip.

Can’t help with MS making the exception as I have not had that experience but I think anyone who was able to achieve it got pixie dusted.

So this is exactly right. Try to double-book your current reservation between the 30 and 60 day mark with your holding points and then cancel your original reservation--or parts of your original reservation as days become available. You might want to copy down or screen shot the reservation number of your original reservation so you know which is which. You can make a new reservation with the holding points within the 30 to 60 day mark and then cancel your original reservation which should return full-use points to your account.

Actually, you don't need to even do that. The system is set up to allow it to pick up holding points for a booked trip as long as you are withint 60 days but more than 31....its a feature of the way it works for modificaitons as the system sees it as a new booking and therefore, will pick up the restricted points even if there are not still rooms available.

Thank you all for the feedback. I will keep working on it.

I will not be able to rebook using the holding since one reservation was at the 11-month window and the other is for DL.

I have some things booked for January and March so hopefully I will be able to adjust once the 60 day window opens.

If one of my kids decides to come with us and I add a name, does that modification allow me to change contracts so that I can use the points in holding? Or must it be either resort or dates that will allow be to change contracts?

They are in the same membership/UY.

I appreciate your help.

You shouldn't have to do anything to the reservation to modify it - you can go through the steps of modifying and it should take you to a page where you can choose what points to use, and you SHOULD be able to modify them to use the points in holding. I don't think you even have to add a name though of course you could.

I tried to do this exact thing in September (long story, holding points from summer), and I could not get it to work. It's possible I wasn't making the request correctly.

Did you try online or via MS? Some at MS won’t do it or don’t know to do it. Online, it will work as long as the reservation is in the same membership, an was not booked during home resort priority if the holding points are from a different resort.

I did forget one thing….If you have banked or borrowed points, and no current UY points, it is possible it won’t work as there is an order to replacing restricted points.

Thanks, this is super helpful. I did try through MS through Chat for help, but that went nowhere. It wasn't a 11-month booking. (The resort wasn't even a home resort for me.). I'm 100% sure there were available un-restricted points on that contract at the time. It's the only time I've ever had points in holding. There was simply an illness, so we cancelled a few days before going. Usually, I'm very good at managing vacation reservations. This was a one-off thing, I suspect. But that info is helpful in case I need it in the future.

My recent resale came with unexpected points in holding expiring shortly. I didn’t want them to go to waste, so pieced a stay together to let someone else stay even if I couldn’t. This took some time but I stalked the site for locations with a lot of normal availability. Finally one popped up! Member services did not volunteer to take the points out of holding and I was too embarrassed to ask.

I had this happen to me as well. I posted about it back when the problem came up, and the theory was that it was something to do with my contracts being a mix of restricted and non restricted or perhaps since it was using a mix of current UY and borrowed points from my BLT contract.

I was modifying an Aulani booking to take 2 OTU points that were in holding status and swap them in, swapping out 2 of my current year BLT points. The BLT contract was padlocked at the top. I had made the booking at 7 months though, as I don't own at Aulani.

MS did happily adjust my points for me via Chat though, so it all worked out.
