My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer today, and I'm hoping all of my Dis friends can spare some prayers and PD for him, and my family as we get ready to look into treatment options. It looks like they caught it early, so hopefully the treatment will be successful.

My family has been preparing for this day for a long time, but the news is still hard to hear. My dad is a chain smoker (I'm guessing he's a two pack a day smoker--he'll never admit how much he smokes, but he smokes several an hour). He's been smoking for over 60 years now (since he was 12). This cancer is just the latest in a string of health issues that are either directly or indirectly related to smoking--a stroke a few years ago, emphysima, chronic cough, etc. Even with all of the health problems, he won't quit smoking (he's been smoking all night).

Here's hoping that everyone's good thoughts can help my dad.

I'm so sorry to hear you, you dad, and your family is dealing with such a scary thing T. . :(

You all will be in my prayers; I hope the treatment goes smoothly for him and is 100% successful- please keep us updated.

Good thoughts for you, your father, and the rest of your family.

I just prayed for him, hopefully he will quit smoking now

Karen, I will keep your father in my prayers {{{{hugs}}}}

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, everyone. My oldest sister called my dad's doctor today to talk to him about it. My dad is going to have a few test (bone scan, brain catscan, liver ultrasound) to make sure that the cancer hasn't spread. The doctor thinks they caught it early enough so that they can treat it with surgery (although my father says that he doesn't want to be cut up--here's hoping we can change his mind on that if the doctor decides that is the best way to treat this).

As for quitting smoking, I just don't see that happening. He's talked about quitting before, but he's never been successful in it (mostly because he doesn't really want to quit). He's used the nicotine patch before, but he smoked even when on it. Even throwing a cigarette in the trash having it catch fire wasn't enough to scare him into quitting.

Thanks again.

You never know, Karen. My Dad suffered a massive coronary at the ripe old age of 52 (was given the Last Rites and everything :() and he was a 2 pack a day smoker who had started in his early teens. He decided that he wanted to live a little longer and quit cold turkey.

Good luck and all the best to you and your Dad!!
