If someone is working at the same minimum wage job they started 10 years ago, and for the same pay, they probably don't deserve a raise.

When I was in high school, I worked for McDonald's, my first job (not including babysitting gigs). I was one of the best employee's there. Never late, hard worker, team player. I was the only person trusted to do order taking for the drive thru durring the busy Saturday and Sunday lunch rushes (and I hated that job!) because I was the fastest, most accurate, and lest likely to have my drawer short (actually it was never short).

After 1 year, I got my review and my raise. It was ten cents.

Beleive me, you can work your butt off at these jobs and not get a raise (or a signifigant one, anyway).

Now, I was bright enough to throw that dime back in my boss's teeth. I went and applied at the new Target that had been built accross the street and made more money and didn't go home at night smelling like a french fry. But not everyone IS that bright. Some people just, for what ever reason, can't see their way clear of the crap job they have to find something better.

What's wrong with helping those that are trying to support themselves or their family (rather than be on welfare!) by giving them a raise once a decade? What's wrong with helping that student that's trying to work their way through college, or the retired person that needs to work part time to pay for their presciptions?

The minimum wage went from 4.25 to 5.15 back in what, 96? Where were the mass layoffs, the rampent inflation, the hundred's of business going out of business? The US economy wasn't brought to it's knees then, or all the other times MW was raised in the past. It won't happen this time either.

Why have politicians set wages at all? And there are many exceptions anyway to the minimum wage law anyway. What's the point?

I truly have to laugh at all these "$75000 a year millionaires" who think because they've got a few bucks and few things going for them, the system is hunky-dory. Newsflash: the system isn't being run for your benefit. The problems haven't hit you yet. They will. Sooner or later, you'll be one of "them".

I also have to laugh over government employees who can't stand the minimum wage but are covered by government benefits, government health insurance, regular raises, etc. Oh, what's that I hear: "I pay for those benefits". So do the rest of us and we aren't being subsidized by the taxpayers. Give it time ........... you'll be nothing more than another expense to be cut too.

Remember this ........... karma bites everyone in the *** eventually. All you hot shots enjoy when it happens to you because I, and a potful of others, will.

Seriously, some people just can't do better for various reasons. They're not cut out for schooling and they simply can't advance. That doesn't mean that they don't work hard and don't do good jobs. Should they never get a raise?

Noone said they shouldn't get a raise.

I fail to see how a federally mandated raise helps them in the ways that everyone expects them to. We're talking a few sense here and there at a time.

Set an automatic built in COL $1 per year adjustment....then COL might go up $2 per year.

I would agree if employers hadn't been historically abusive to their lowest paid. I don't see employers being fair or responsible when it comes to labor issues.

I don't have to hone anything, your post is there for all to read. You said you knew what other people were thinking. Either you are psychic or you are crazy. I'm thinking not the former.

Honestly, about the only people who make minimum wage are students and deadbeats.

My 69-year-old mom makes minimum wage working at a retail store that she had to go work at when my father (who was a retired steel worker) died and she was no longer entitled to his pension, health benefits, etc. since he retired prior to them being married (he was an early medical retiree).

So tell me....she is not a student....so does that make her a deadbeat?

Whoever voted it down, what's the big fuss about? We have a minimum wage of about $9.73 an hour and we haven't imploded.
